Having succeeded his father as fourth Earl of Donegall in 1678, he refused to attend the Irish Parliament called by James II in May 1689, but later sat in that called by William III in October 1692.
Having made a career in the British Army, Lord Donegall founded the 35th Regiment of Foot in Belfast in 1701, becoming its first Colonel.
In 1704 he accompanied the regiment to fight in the War of the Spanish Succession in Spain, and was appointed Major General of Spanish forces.

Clotworthy Skeffington, 3rd Viscount Massereene (1660-1714), was in his youth colonel of a regiment of foot and joint commander of the Williamite forces in Co. Antrim.
It was not therefore an unduly encumbered estate which the 3rd Earl of Massereene entered upon in 1809, though this was partly because his mother's Derbyshire estate had borne the brunt of the preceding storm.

 PWRR Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment - Royal Sussex
The Regiment was raised in Belfast in 1701 by Arthur Chichester, 3rd Earl of Donegall who owned large estates in the north of Ireland.
As a mark of his favour to the Earl who raised the Regiment at his own expense, King William III gave permission for the officers and soldiers to wear orange facings on their uniforms.
It lost its first Colonel, the Earl of Donegall, who was killed in 1706 in the fighting at Barcelona although the Regiment itself was not present.

The Chichesters (later the Donegalls) lived in England as absentee landlords but came to live at Ormeau at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
After re-marrying in 1862, the 3rd Marquis of Donegall, decided to build a new residence within the deer park on the slopes of Cave Hill.
The Donegall coat of arms appears over the front door and on the north wall of the castle, while a section of the Shaftesbury crest appears on the exterior staircase.

William was found guilty for his part in the Gilmerston raid; he was charged with oppressing Lord Hay’s tenants by destroying nine arable acres and forcing the tenants from the “ruids of the dykes of Gilmerston” in 1531, and for the detention of five years profits amounting to £40 annually between 1529-33[4].
Sir Edward was the younger brother of Sir Arthur Chichester, created Lord Chichester of Belfast, and upon his death in 1624; Sir Edward inherited his brother’s vast estate in Ireland.

The absence of Strongs in Ballybulgan by 1858 is consistant with Earle Strong's family tradition of emigration in 1840-1850, and the names of the brother/cousins are consistent.

In 1881 the "Roussillon Plume" was incorporated in the badge of the Royal Sussex Regiment.
