Arthur Ellsworth Summerfield was postmaster general under President Eisenhower from January 21, 1953, to January 20, 1961.
Summerfield's first foray into politics was as an organizer for Wendell Wilkie in the latter's unsuccessful 1940 presidential challenge.
Summerfield was named chairman of the RNC the day after Eisenhower's nomination as the Republican presidential candidate in 1952 and supervised the election campaign.

ELLSWORTH - Mary F. Nienke, 73, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth, Kan. She was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Columbia, Mo., the daughter of George and Sally Baker Hyde.
A resident of Ellsworth for 45 years, moving from Columbia, Mo., she was a homemaker and had worked at Ellsworth Good Samaritan Center and Hospital, Chickishay Mobile Homes, and Elkan.

 KU News - KU announces fall 2006 Watkins-Berger, Summerfield scholars
Summerfield scholarships for men are funded through an endowment established by the late Solon E. Summerfield, a Lawrence native who earned bachelor’s and law degrees from KU in 1899 and 1901, respectively, then moved to New York where he founded the Gotham Silk Hosiery Co. He endowed the scholarship program in 1929.
Summerfield Hall, home to KU’s School of Business, was named for him at its dedication in 1960.
Watkins-Berger scholarships for women are financed by the estate of philanthropist Elizabeth M. Watkins of Lawrence and an endowment in memory of Emily Berger by her younger brother, the late Arthur Berger, and his wife, Marie.
