  Arthur Evans information - Search.com
Evans was the son of Sir John Evans, a paper manufacturer and amateur archaeologist of Welsh descent.
Evans' special interest was the Greek island of Crete, and he was largely responsible for the excavations of the palace-city of Knossos, chief centre of the Minoan civilization, which uncovered the site that is open to visitors today.
Evans, however, should also be remembered for his own irrationally obstinate Creto-centrism, which led to unfriendly debate between himself and the mainland archaeologists Carl Blegen and Alan Wace.

He was the son of Sir John Evans, a paper manufacturer and amateur archaeologist of Welsh descent.
It should be remembered that while Evans was working at Knossos in the period between 1899 and 1935, many of his contemporaries were interested only in removing items of interest from the sites they uncovered.
Evans was knighted in 1911 for his services to archaeology, and is commemorated both at Knossos and at the Ashmolean Museum.

Skeptical at first, the knights eventually accept Arthur's self-admittedly schizzy allegiances, to his British heritage as well as the Romans (his "other" name is Arturius, and that sword of his, Excalibur, is a family heirloom rather than supernatural implement; apparently, a Lucius Artorius Castus did exist, but in 184 AD).
Staged as brutal free-for-alls, the combat scenes are less concerned with delineating moral sides than with showing Arthur's determination and the horrors of warfare; the R rated version is more effective in conveying the awfulness.

This book is an account of the five years Arthur was incarcerated in Stalag 8B.
It is a moving, yet vivid, account of a quieter sort of heroism – perhaps one that most British former POWs will relate to – of the day to day struggle to survive despite nearly starving to death in sub-freezing conditions amid the cruel indifference of the German guards.
Arthur tells how he and his colleagues, with one sad exception, escaped death in a pit explosion which killed almost 200 miners and of his connection with the late Wing Commander Douglas Baders plan to escape by ‘plane from Gleiwitz aerodrome.
