Television City Chronicle News: NEA Honors Former Mechanic as Teacher of the Year
Arthur Fonzarelli, a shop teacher at Jefferson High School in Milwaukee, received the Connie Brooks Memorial Trophy, an award that recognizes the most outstanding teacher in the nation.
Fonzarelli, a one-time motorcycle mechanic and self-described ex-hood, the honor marked the end of a long and winding journey that began when the high-school drop-out began surreptiously attending night school back in the 1950s.
Fonzarelli represents an ongoing decline in standards that reached its nadir two years ago when the NEA presented the Brooks Award to Charlie Moore, a teacher of a gifted and talented class at Monroe High School in Manhattan.
