 California Artist Arthur Frank Mathews
Arthur Frank Mathews (1860-1945) was a Renaissance man. A painter, muralist, and master craftsman, he was born on October 1, 1860 in Markesan, Wisconsin.
The Mathews family moved to Oakland, California when Arthur was six years old.
The creeping Modernism made the works of Mathews appear old-fashioned and for half a century his work was in eclipse.

There is better quality in Arthur F. Mathews' "Triumph of Culture," over the entrance to the Court of Seasons.
In color and force this comes nearer to the splendid standard set by Frank Brangwyn than anything else in the Exposition's mural decoration.

The role of Father Ted was originally to go to co-writer Arthur Mathews, but it went to Dermot Morgan after the writers saw an earlier performance of his as the character Father Trendy.
Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly, Ardal O'Hanlon as Father Dougal McGuire, Frank Kelly as Father Jack Hackett, Pauline McLynn as Mrs.
Father Ted is one of those rare sitcoms that defies categorization--it owes as much to Flann O'Brien and Samuel Beckett as it does to Monty Python--and its blend of satire, character comedy, and anarchic surrealism has made it a cult favorite around the world.
