Freed's best-known songs include his first hit, "When Buddha Smiles" (1921); the follow-up that established him, 1923's "I Cried for You"; "Pagan Love Song"; "Singin' in the Rain" (1929); "Temptation" (1933); "All I Do Is Dream of You" (1934); "Broadway Rhythm"; and "You Are My Lucky Star" (1935).

One interesting things about the old studio system (each studio with its own 'stock' family) was that it was usually the producer, rather than the director, who created his own 'brand'.
Freed started out in Hollywood as a lyricist, contributing songs to the MGM films The Broadway Melody, The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (which included a song called "Singin' In The Rain") and Broadway Melody of 1937.
Freed made the revolutionary decision to film as much of the movie as possible on location in New York itself for realism (most films were filmed entirely on the studio's city-sized backlots), and even more controversially almost all of Leonard Bernstein's original score was ditched.

By the end of the '20s Freed was in Hollywood where he contributed the score to The Broadway Melody (1929) and THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929, amongst others.
These were all written for various films before Freed devoted himself to producing, although several of their most popular numbers were reprised in SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1951), including the title song which was originally introduced in HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929.
For a number of years in the '60s Freed was president of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, from whom he received the Irving Thalberg Award in 1951 and a further award in 1967 ‘for distinguished service to the Academy and the production of six top-rated Awards telecasts’.
