Arthur George Hammond (VC, KCB, DSO was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 14 December 1879 at the action on the Asmai Heights, near Kabul, Afghanistan, Captain Hammond defended the top of the hill with a rifle and fixed bayonet against large numbers of the enemy, while the 72nd Highlanders and Guides were retiring.
Arthur Hammond was born in Dawlish, Devon in 1843 and, on leaving Sherborne School, graduated from Addiscombe Military College in 1861.

Although Arthur George Hammond was born on the 28th September 1843 in Dawlish, Devon, his birth, for some unknown reason, was not registered with the authorities.
Arthur Hammond first joined the 82nd Regiment ( Prince of Wales's Volunteer Regiment), before being posted to the 12th ( Kilat-l-Ghilzai) Native Infantry in India.
Hammond, as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1861, took part in most of the major campaigns that occurred in India at the time, eventually reaching the substansive rank of Temporary Brigadier General in 1891.

"At the action on the Asmai Heights near Kabul on 14th December 1879, Captain Hammond defended the top of the hill with a rifle and fixed bayonet against a large number of the enemy while the 72nd Highlanders and Guides were retiring.
Therefore, Arthur Hammond's act in turning and facing a huge number of the Afghans alone, armed only with a rifle and bayonet while his fellow soldiers retired, was a high act of gallantry, having to retire himself at some point of course.
This he did later, rescuing on the way a seriously wounded sepoy.
