  Arthur Hastings
Captain Arthur Hastings is the partner and best friend of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.
A former British Army officer in World War I, he is extremely brave and often used by Poirot for physical duties such as catching and subduing a criminal.
Hastings represents the traditional English gentleman -- not too bright but absolutely fastidious, a throwback to the Victorian era who is always concerned about "fair play." He is chivalrous, as well, possessing a pronounced weakness for pretty women with auburn hair (a fact that gets him and Poirot into trouble more than once).

 Hastings History
Hastings most likely received its name from a resident named Saunders who reportedly had been born in the English town of Hastings, where William the Conqueror won the famous battle in 1066.
After the Aqueduct was completed, many laborers remained in Hastings to work in the quarries and stone cutting yards while the women in their families found work in the large estate houses then being built.
The project was sparked by public-spirited Dr. Arthur C. Langmuir, who created a park on the site of the marble quarry (later turned into a village dump) and also took hundreds of photographs of the village that are now preserved in archives of the Hastings Historical Society.

Next, Arthur Hastings, a professor at the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California focused on what he calls "paradigm fixation," or the psychological and sociological factors that contribute to the unwillingness of scientists to consider the empirical evidence for survival.
Hastings also pointed out that one of the most underrated discoveries of 20th century science came from the mathematician Kurt Gödel, whose "Incompleteness Theorem" demonstrated that there are always assumptions in any closed system that cannot be proved or disproved.
Providing a bit of historical background to the resistance of controversial new ideas, Hastings mentioned a few scientific theories that were initially resisted but later accepted, such as the theory of continental drift, which was first proposed by Wegener in 1912 but did not gain widespread acceptance until the 1960s.

It comes as something of a surprise to be reminded that Captain Arthur Hastings featured in only eight Poirot novels — although he did narrate a number of mostly forgettable short stories that Christie wrote in the 1920s.
Yet Hastings is a well- remembered figure, and not merely because he has featured so regularly in the television series as sidekick to David Suchet's Poirot.
Christie conceived Hastings as a 'Dr Watson' figure, but his character was so two-dimensional that before long she tired of him and set him off to ranch in Argentina.
