 Arthur Irwin
Arthur Irwin was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1858.
Irwin's career as a player fizzled out within a few years, but he became a player-manager in 1889, and led two teams to championships: the 1890 Boston Players League team (featuring Hoss Radbourn), and the 1891 Boston American Association team (featuring Paul Radford at shortstop).
Irwin also apparently put his brilliant mind to work in his private life, and was reported to have kept wives and children in both Boston and New York that had no idea of each other's existence for thirty years.

Yes, Irwin was very much a man of intelligence and imagination, and yes, some of the articles he published in Maclean's 'appear hackneyed, sophomoric, and sensational,' especially in hindsight.
Irwin was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, in 1898, the son of a Methodist clergyman, and he attended Winnipeg's Wesley College and Toronto's Victoria College.
By MacKenzie's account, Irwin was a good diplomat, but it is hard not to conclude that the qualities that made him a top editor - his analytical skills and his ability to spot and nurse talent - could have been put to better use on behalf of the country.
