The Jaffe-Quinn Thesis: Appraising ‘Theoretical Mathematics’ Jaffe and Quinn inquire as to whether speculative mathematics, as it occurs in current interactions between physics and mathematics, is at all dangerous, and as to how those unpleasant side effects known from the history of informal mathematics may be avoided.
The way how Jaffe and Quinn classify successes and deficiencies in mathematics suggests characterising their picture of history as follows: (i) They prefer a linear growth that is initiated by a conjecture or a theoretical research programme which, though slowly and piecemeal, immediately takes off and yields rigorous results.

He reveals in his preface that the backdrop for this colloquium was the 1993 article by Arthur Jaffe and Frank Quinn in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society.

Jaffe points out that little mathematics is written in the form of a traditional proof (though mathematicians agree on what that form is), and asks whether the relaxation of mathematical standards may not endanger the reliability of mathematical results.

Since the Jaffes' donation in 1998 to Florida Atlantic University, the collection has more than doubled in size due to continued donations from Arthur, as well as the donations of our many supporters through the Jaffe Collection Support Fund.

 `Theoretical' Experimentation
This may be in part what led Arthur Jaffe and Frank Quinn to advocate what they have named `Theoretical Mathematics' (note that many mathematicians think they have been doing theoretical mathematics for years) but which we like to think of as `theoretical experimentation'.
Although it was originally conceived outside the experimental framework, the central problems Jaffe and Quinn need to deal with are the same.
As described in Arthur Jaffe and Frank Quinn's ``Theoretical Mathematics'': Toward a Cultural Synthesis of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics it appears to be mainly a call for a loosening of the bonds of rigor.
