When SS Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Liebehenschel became Kommandant of Auschwitz after Ho"ss's promotion, he ordered all the SS and the Kapos in charge of prisoners to stop the random beatings.
When Liebehenschel found out, he demoted them to ordinary prisoners and they were put in a work Kommando where they had to do physical labor.
Therefore, the truth is that Ho"ss allowed the beatings and the terror to continue because it served his purpose of maintaining camp discipline in the tradition of Theodore Eicke.

Indeed, Liebehenschel — with the probable collaboration of Wirths, with whom he was on good terms, and the cooperation of Weber — arranged for a “therapeutic program” that had three specific components.
According to Langbein, the change was made because the outside world had learned too much of what was happening at Auschwitz; the change was, then, apparently cosmetic, although Liebehenschel did carry out some reforms in the direction of fewer arbitrary procedures and less harsh punishments.

If researchers are expecting to find any startling revelations from the Auschwitz trials conducted in Poland immediately after the war or entertaining hopes to discover any other convincing evidence as to the existence of homicidal gas chambers at Auschwitz, they should think again.
Nary one word from the actual trials of former camp commandant Rudolf Hoess, his assistant Maximillian Grabner, nor subsequent camp commandant Arthur Liebehenschel, et al is cited.
For rather predictable reasons, Sehn prefers to rely not on the records of the trials over which he personally presided, nor on the affidavits or testimony of the accused and the accusers, or any additional supporting documentation, opting instead to quote liberally from Hoess’ questionable memoirs.
