  George A. Mathews - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Arthur Mathews (June 4, 1852–April 19, 1941) was an American lawyer of Brookings, South Dakota.
He was active in the government of the Dakota Territory, and was a territorial delegate to the United States House of Representatives.
Mathews returned home to the private practice of law, although he did serve as mayor of the city of Brookings from 1897–1903.

For instance, Mathews' "California Landscape" hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Pope's "Wisdom Crowning Literature," which hangs in the Greene Library (now called the African American Museum and Library at Oakland), cleverly casts Mount Tamalpais as Mount Parnassus in her classical painting of toga'd figures.
Mathews had completed two murals, "Inspiration" and "The Arts," which were hung in the library's second floor delivery room in 1905, to great acclaim.
Mathews planned a "Wheat Series," which included "The Soil", "The Harvest," "The Mart" and "The Loaf." Unfortunately, only "The Soil" and a painting called "The Grain" (originally, "The Harvest") were executed in this series.

Arthur Chester Mathews enlisted in the Navy in 1927, at the age of 18.
The winter of 1934 found Arthur transiting the Pacific to join the USS John D. Edwards (DD-216), part of the Asiatic Fleet operating out of the Philippines and the Chinese Coast and operated with the Yangtze, South China Sea and Neutrality Patrols, guarding American interests during the Sino-Japanese War.
In June 1937 Arthur transferred to Boston Navy Yard for assignment in the new construction of the USS Gridley (DD-380) and remained aboard her until October 1939.

Arthur F. Mathews, a prominent San Francisco artist, was given the commission to create a series of murals that would depict the historical periods of California.
The Capitol Murals are an excellent example of a regional artistic style known as "California decorative." Arthur and his wife Lucia Kleinhans Mathews combined a romantic classicism (and idealism) with a Renaissance color palette and California imagery to create this distinctive California decorative style.
Mathews chose to describe the four epochs and the panels within them in flourishes of language typical to his era.

With one foot in surrealism and the other knee-deep in the muck of an Irish bog, this series of comic sketches echoes with the voices of Ted and Dougal and touches on all the same themes of sexual repression, racist abuse, sexist caricatures and alcoholic mishaps.
He's relieved to marry Noreen, an ugly woman "with the sexual urges of a corpse", whose illnesses plague him for the rest of the book.
I do however, get the feeling that Arthur Mathews, as a modern Irish writer may be venting certain personal issues & angers here.
