Arthur Lovejoy was born in 1873 in Berlin, Germany, where his father was conducting medical research.
The history of ideas as conceived by Lovejoy was a methodology that required the contributions of scholars throughout the university.
Arthur O. Lovejoy, professor of history at Hopkins from 1910 to 1939, is credited with the introduction of the interdisciplinary academic area known as the history of ideas.

Arthur Oncken Lovejoy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arthur Oncken Lovejoy (Berlin, October 10, 1873 - Baltimore, December 30, 1962) was an influential American intellectual historian, who founded the subdiscipline known as "the history of ideas".
Lovejoy insisted that the history of ideas should focus on "unit ideas," single concepts (often with a one-word name), and study how unit ideas combine and recombine with each other over time.
Lovejoy helped found the American Association of University Professors and the Maryland chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

History of ideas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The historian Arthur O. Lovejoy (1873-1962) first used the phrase history of ideas and initiated its systematic study in the early decades of the twentieth century.
Aside from his students and colleagues engaged in related projects (such as Rene Wellek and Leo Spitzer, with whom Lovejoy engaged in extended debates), scholars such as Isaiah Berlin, Michel Foucault, and others have continued to work in a spirit close to that with which Lovejoy pursued the history of ideas.
As Lovejoy saw it, the task of the historian of ideas was to identify such unit-ideas and to describe their historical emergence and recession in new forms and combinations.

Arthur Oncken Lovejoy Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
Arthur Oncken Lovejoy (1873-1962), American philosopher, helped establish the history of ideas as a separate scholarly field.
Born in Berlin, Germany, on Oct. 10, 1873, Arthur Lovejoy emigrated to the United States.
Whereas most intellectual historians had emphasized the external relationship of thought to environment, Lovejoy stressed internal analysis to demonstrate how the meaning of ideas changes through the ages and how "unit-ideas" manifest themselves in the thought of men outside the philosophical profession.

This is the landmark book of the field Lovejoy single-handedly invented (and of which perhaps he is still the sole master): the history of ideas.
He wrote some other essays about different ideas and their histories (one of my favorites is about the concept of the "fortunate fall"), but this is his magnum opus and it reads like a thrilling detective story.
Lovejoy was a professor of philosophy at Johns Hopkins University.
