Arthur Schwartz of the John Templeton Foundation will speak about character education in public schools on Feb. 1 as part of Wake Forest University's 2000-2001 Year of Ethics and Honor event series.
Schwartz is a former professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
"Arthur Schwartz is widely recognized as the foremost authority on character education in the United States," said Sam Gladding, associate provost and chairman of the Year of Ethics and Honor Committee.

Schwartz was introduced to Dietz’ lyrics while attending the Broadway show Merry Go Round and so taken with the lyricists wit and verse, Schwartz begged Dietz to write to his melody.
Schwartz received two Academy Award nominations for Best Song: the first in 1944 for the song “They’re Either Too Young or Too Old” in the film Thank Your Lucky Stars; the second in 1948 for the song “A Gal in Calico” from the film The Time, the Place and the Girl.
Arthur Schwartz died in 1984, in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania.

Schwartz finally set aside his legal career to become a Hollywood producer in the 1940s and 1950s, but he occasionally composed new projects.
Schwartz worked with lyricist Dorothy Fields on the scores for two Broadway hits starring Shirley Booth – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1951) and By the Beautiful Sea (1954).
Schwartz reunited with Dietz to compose a TV version of A Bell for Adano (56), as well as the tuneful scores for the short-lived Broadway musicals The Gay Life (1961) and Jennie (1963).

Schwartz taught himself harmonica and piano as a child and began playing for silent films at the age of 14.
Schwartz and Dietz's best Broadway revue was The Band Wagon (June 3, 1931), which marked the final appearance of Fred Astaire with his sister and dancing partner Adele Astaire before her marriage and retirement, and spawned "Dancing in the Dark," the most successful song Schwartz and Dietz ever wrote.
These were Schwartz's final productions, though he continued to work until his death from a stroke at 83.
