PLANN ING Minister Arthur Somare said the Government was delivering on its promise to provide services to rural people when he opened a rubber factory in his electorate.
Mr Somare stood in for his father Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare to re-commission the Technically Specified Rubber (TSR) factory.
“This country would have been better if the Prime Minister (Sir Michael Somare) had been in office for the (last) 30 years,” he said.

Chief Sir Michael Somare was also in court to lend support to Mr Apelis and son Arthur, whose win in Angoram is being challenged by Sir Julius' man Ludwig Schulz.
However, Sir Julius' lawyer, Michael Wilson, said he filed the original petition on the 39th day (Friday, Aug 8), and was to file the amendment on the 40th day (Aug 9) which was a Saturday.
Sir Julius, who lost his Namatanai seat to cousin Ephraim Apelis in Election '97, lodged an appeal last month against his defeat, alleging undue influence and bribery as the cause of his downfall.

 Govt moves quickly to quell political battle
Under the changes, speaker of parliament, Jeffery Nape, was endorsed as chairman of the committee with member for Angoram, Arthur Somare, and other National Alliance party MPs as members—a move that consequently removed most People’s National Congress MPs from the committee.
The application, which was filed on June 10, by Bill Skate and the Opposition, was to challenge the removal of Skate as then speaker and seeks to quash the election of the current speaker in the court of law.
Meanwhile an application has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Jeffery Nape from performing duties as speaker of parliament.

With his son Arthur Somare and Public Enterprises Minister Dr Puka Temu embroiled in a public row over the sale of Telikom to Econet, the Prime Minister reckons the public debate is healthy.
TELIKOM (PNG) Ltd is seeking court orders to stop its proposed sale to Econet Wireless (PNG) Ltd.The group’s board filed the application at the Waigani National Court on Tuesday - a day before it was revealed that Econet Wireless Group of South Africa had agreed to take up 48% instead of the original 51%.
On Wednesday, Dr Temu told The National that Econet had agreed to take up 48%, allowing the government to maintain control of Telikom with 52%.

Finally, congratulations Mr Arthur Somare for your overwhelming majority win as the new governor for East Sepik.
I now, as a true ``pikinini blong Sepik'' and as a small time leader too in my own right, and also as one who is opposed to blatant lies, call on Mr Wanjik and Sir Pita to publicly apologise to the Somares and the people of East Sepik.
They are simply being ignorant and naive not to know and understand what actually happened on July 28, 1999 in the East Sepik provincial assembly chambers.
