		The plane was badly damaged and Scarf was mortally wounded.
		The story went that Scarf’s wife Elizabeth, known as ‘Sally’, was a nurse at Alor Star hospital and that he died in her arms after she had volunteered two pints of blood for a transfusion.

		As a regular soldier he became one of the core around which the British Army of volunteers and conscripts was created.

		Despite severe opposition, including attacks by numerous enemy fighter planes, Squadron Leader Scarf completed his attack successfully, but was mortally wounded in so doing.
		He made a valiant attempt to return to his base, but owing to his wounds had to make a forced landing at Alor Star, accomplishing this without injury to his crew.
