 Edward Gibbon Wakefield
His father, Edward Wakefield, author of Ireland, Statistical and Political (1812), was a surveyor and land agent in extensive practice; his grandmother, Priscilla Wakefield (1751-1832), was a popular author for the young, and one of the introducers of savings banks.
In 1846 Wakefield, exhausted with labor, was struck down by apoplexy, and spent more than a year in complete retirement, writing during his gradual recovery his Art of Colonization.
Arthur Wakefield, who was associated with his brother in these transactions about land, was killed during a fight with some natives at Wairau on the 17th of June 1843.

Wakefield tried to convince the Wairau chiefs to acknowledge his claim to the Wairau with the offer of a schooner and other goods, but he was refused.
The magistrate, Wakefield, Tuckett, and several other men crossed over unarmed to the side of the stream where the Maori party was encamped, and Te Puaha read passages from the Bible encouraging both parties to peace.
Wakefield returned across the stream to take command of his men on the other side, and when Thompson appeared to be threatened, ordered his men forward.

Captain Wakefield was prepared to return to Nelson but the police magistrate and the Crown Prosecutor insisted that it was time to teach the Māori a lesson and insisted on proceeding.
