  Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934)
RTHUR WING PINERO was born at London in 1855.
The following year William Archer wrote of Pinero as "a thoughtful and conscientous writer with artistic aims, if not yet with full command of his artistic means." The "artistic means" rapidly developed, for in the farces "Dandy Dick," "The Schoolmistress," and "The Magistrate" the dramatist revealed extraordinary skill and a natural bent for comedy.
Pinero has often been criticized as formal, old-fashioned, conventional; the criticism is in some respects not unwarranted, though the spirit in which it is made is rather an indication of a desire to applaud other dramatists who departed from Pinero's methods than properly to judge his achievements.

Though English writer Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) was an extremely successful playwright of his era, a century later his body of work was known almost only in the literary histories of his craft.
Pinero first rose to prominence in the 1880s with the comedies, farces, and, later, serious dramas he wrote for the London stage, many of which exposed contemporary social ills and attracted not a small degree of scandal as a result.

 Sir Arthur Wing Pinero
Born on May 24, 1855, in London, to Portuguese parents, Arthur Wing Pinero studied law before turning to the theatre, becoming an actor in Edinburgh at the age of 19 (earning one pound a week).
Knighted in 1909, Pinero continued to write plays for the rest of his life, but his prominence as a social dramatist was eclipsed by that of Bernard Shaw.
The Enchanted Cottage (1921) blended Pinero's social realism (it was among the first plays to deal directly with the aftermath of World War I) with the rise of German Expressionism in the theatre, a style best known today through the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919).

HERE will be some trouble about 'biography' because I have never troubled myself to supply particulars of my early life to any writer." This quotation is from a letter written by Sir Arthur to that able and friendly commentator, Clayton Hamilton.
Arthur Wing Pinero was in race, part Jew and part Gentile; in blood, part Latin and part Anglo-Saxon; in name, Portuguese.
It was Sir Arthur's custom to direct all rehearsals and literally train each actor in the interpretation of his or her part, but such was his shyness that nothing could persuade him to attend "first nights." He had made one visit to America in the eighteen eighties to direct the rehearsals of The Magistrate.

THE MAGISTRATE by Arthur Wing Pinera at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End Theaterland
Pinero was an unusually generous writer and even the smaller roles are satisfying.
As the naive magistrate-stepfather whom Cis lures to a louche hotel for late-night drinkers, the great Ian Richardson leaves the flirtatiously poisonous Urquhart far behind, bringing his matchless comic timing and technical skill to a role that is, in truth, a bit of an awkward fit for him.
Pinero's philanthropic magistrate is a pompous innocent led into baffling territory by that hormonal storm in a teacup, Cis.

It said Arthur Wing Pinero, knighted in 1909, was in fact a British playwright who specialized in what Cambridge calls "social dramas highlighting the plight of women in an unforgiving world" -- more of a starchy Henrik Ibsen, it seems.
Pinero fit an incredible amount into those 41 years: After bouncing in and out of jail, mostly for drug-related offenses, he participated in a theatre workshop at Sing Sing and wrote the first draft of what would become his first play, Short Eyes, in 1974.
