Articulated locomotive usually means a steam locomotive with one or more engine units which can move relative to the main frame.
Articulated locomotives are generally used either on lines with extreme curvature—logging, industrial, or mountainous railways, for example—or for very large locomotives to run on railways with more standard track curvature.
Of these, the Mallet locomotive and its simple-expansion derivative was the most popular, followed by the Garratt type (mostly built in the United Kingdom) and the various geared steam locomotive types, the latter largely used in logging, mining and industrial uses.

In the U.S., articulated vehicle is used to refer to vehicles which have a pivoting joint in their construction which is permanent or semi-permanent, allowing the vehicle to turn more sharply.
Steam locomotives were sometimes articulated in that the driving wheels could pivot around turns.
Buses are articulated to allow for a much longer bus which can still navigate with the turning radius of a normal bus.

AN articulated locomotive is a locomotive having one or more of its driven axles capable of taking up positions in which they do not remain parallel to the others, so that they assume angular positions when rounding curves.
Although the articulated locomotive has been used on subsidiary and mountain lines since the earliest times of railways—it was invented in 1830 by Horatio Allen, the American engineer— its widespread adoption for main-line traffic on important railways belongs largely to the twentieth century.
The axles of an articulated locomotive are arranged in groups, each group being spoken of as a "truck." This may support part of a rigid main frame, or a mobile frame which is integral with the truck.

In the bottom Fairlie design, articulation is accomplished by allowing the six coupled driver blocks to rotate on their hinge points placed at mid block.
Articulated locomotives, essentially having two engines fed by independent steam pipes need to exert equal tractive power if slippage is to be eliminated.
Mason's articulated locomotives only had one boiler but also only had one set of drivers, cutting the the tractive effort in half for a given engine weight.

 Mallet Articulated Locomotives
In an articulated compound locomotive having twice as many driving wheels as a given locomotive of the rigid-frame type, double the tractive power of the latter is available, with the same weight per driving wheel on the rail and with no increase in the length of the rigid wheel base.
In this articulated compound locomotive, these functions are performed by a special mechanism called the intercepting valve, which is located between the receiver and the exhaust passages from the high pressure cylinders.
When the locomotive is changed into simple working, the emergency valve, 6, is opened, which allows the exhaust steam from the high pressure cylinders to pass through the wrought iron pipe to the exhaust pipe in the smoke box and to the atmosphere.

The second locomotive has an articulated boiler, with each section rigidly mounted on its respective frames: The flexible joint consists of fifty rings of high carbon steel, which are ten inches wide and formed with a slight set, so that when placed adjacent to one another they form a series of V-shaped joints.
In a locomotive of this type, it is not necessary to have sliding supports under the forward part of the boiler; and the locomotive curves with a minimum amount of resistance, and its stability, when traversing a curve, is not affected.
The high-pressure cylinders of a Mallet articulated locomotive are lubricated from the cab in the usual manner.

Because the traffic and the locomotives were small, the roads were light in rail and bridge construction and sharp in radius of curvature.
In 1884 he took out French patent 162,876 for a system of articulated locomotives whose focus was not on increased adhesion and radius of curvature limitations but rather on the then vexing problem of the day-the utilization of compounded steam.

Articulated locomotives were once a relatively common sight on American railroads, especially west of the Mississippi.
Unquestionably, it was a very complex locomotive for its time and the engineering staff at Maffei had all it could do to solve the many problems inherent with designing and manufacturing the many steam and water lines with the necessary flexible couplings needed for a Mallet design.
Modifications of the locomotives of the original 1913/1914 series (96 001 to 96 015) were started on 96 003 and 005 in August 1929 at RAW (Reichsbahn Ausbesserungserk; modification center) Ingolstadt near Munich.

Garratt came to Beyer's before he registered his patent for this locomotive and shortly before H.A. Hoy died suddenly in 1908, to be succeeded as general manager by Rogerson.
Then two of us went down to the railway to see the Festiniog locomotives actually at work, and when we came back we were able to build up a joint which was successful and formed the basis of all the future improvements which have been made until the present day.
In any articulated locomotive the flexible steam joints present the knottiest problem to the designer and the fact that the Garratt joint was developed from that of the earlier Fairlie articulated locomotive is of con siderable interest.

To be a true Mallet locomotive, it must be articulated and be a compound, i.e.
SP lingo was that all articulateds were known as Mallets regardless of whether they were simple or compound.
On the SP, a 2-8-0 was known as Consolidation, hence the 'C' in the x-8-8-x drivered locos and the 2-6-0 were known as Mogul's, hence the M in the x-6-6-x locomotives.

Designed by the locomotive engineer and inventor Anatole Mallet (1837-1919), a Mallet type locomotive is a four cylinder compound articulated locomotive.
Exceptions to this were such locomotives as Norfolk and Western's famous Y class 2-8-8-2s, which were still being built as compounds into the 1950s, and of course the logging Mallets, of which all but six were compounds.
With simple articulateds the fuel economy benefits of a true Mallet were lost, however, the four Weyerhaeuser simple logging Mallets had higher tractive effort and a speed advantage over Weyerhaeuser's compound Mallets.

Confusion has arisen as it is quite common in the USA to call a simple articulated (using straight boiler steam) to all cylinders as a Mallett.
It is normally thought that Geared Locomotives are a small subset of the articulated type -however the reverse is quite true...
The Heisler type of locomotive has two cylinders under the boiler at right angles and power is transferred to a central drive shaft thence to the power bogies via a Universal Joint.

 Steamtown NHS: Special History Study
Engine No. 4012 is the only articulated locomotive (with more than a single set of drive wheels pivoting on more than one center) currently in the Steamtown collection.
Because of her fairly recent date of construction, a report on this locomotive should be comparatively easy to research.
Due to her great length, the locomotive will not fit on a reconstructed Scranton turntable or in a restored Scranton roundhouse, and may, therefore, have to be exhibited and preserved outdoors.

The Big Boys, Yellowstones, as well as many other articulated steam locomotives, used simple expansion (high pressure cylinders all around), and thus, according to the strictest definition of the term, are not true mallets.
Articulated locomotives such at the N&W Y class did use compound expansion and therefore are true "mallets".

According to "Articulated Locomotives" by Lionel Wiener, this has been done in the Klose design, but I'm not sure how widespread this design was.
On USA Mallets and straight "simple" articulateds, there was never any attempt to synchronize the two "engines" and this was also true for the B&O and Pennsy non-articulated four cylinder locomotives.
There were four cylinder locomotives with synchronization, and these were a few experimental compound locomotives that had two high pressure and two low pressure cylinders all driving the same pairs of driving wheels like a three-cylinder compound.

I could not find the earlier topic, where a modeler was requesting a copy of the Mantua articulated instructions.
This is a bit better, in the April 1955 issue of Model Railroader, p 20-22 there is an article on building an HO 2-6-6-2 from (nearly) scratch.
The techniques in this article are directly applicable to building a 2-4-4-2, or any other articulated - in any scale.

Trevithick’s locomotive was the first actual steam locomotive.
Another area of model neglect is the double six-coupled articulated steam locomotive.
While models of double-eights generally have both engines swinging in order to traverse 18 inch radius curves (in HO scale), a double-six might just be able to turn that radius with the rear engine fixed in place.

Many geared steam locos were converted when they reached the end of their useful life by removing the boiler and cylinders and hooking a gas or diesel engine to the drivetrain; this example, a converted Heisler, is a real doozie!
Certainly, few large steam locomotives are odder than the AT&SF jointed-boiler articulateds, the VGN 2-10-10-2, or the Soviet Class AA20 4-14-4.
For odd big diesels, I doubt anything could top the PRR Centipede or the German diesel-pneumatic Hudson.
