Topic: Articulated steering

Steering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steering is the term applied to the collection of components, linkages, etc. which allow for a car or other vehicle to follow a course determined by its driver, except in the case of rail transport by which rail tracks combined together with railroad switches provide the steering function.
The most conventional steering arrangement is to turn the front wheels using a hand–operated steering wheel which is positioned in front of the driver, via the steering column, which may contain universal joints to allow it to deviate somewhat from a straight line.
Articulated steering is a system by which a four-wheel drive vehicle is split into front and rear halves which are connected by a vertical hinge.

The output from the angle of articulated sensing element means is used to guide each of the wheel sets to a radial configuration when the vehicle negotiates a curve.
Articulation sensing means 5 being on the other side of the longitudinal vehicle axis 22 from articulation sensing means 4 will sense an increase of the angle, this increase being the same value as the decrease sensed by articulation sensing means 4.
Thus, the body portions of the articulated truck are seen as 102 and 103 and are comparable to the vehicle body portions 2 and 3, respectively.

Unasylva - No. 83 - Supplement - Use of articulated wheeled tractors in logging
Articulated steering is the steering of a vehicle (tracked or wheeled) consisting of two units of a single pivot point system in which the pivot is not located over the axle of either unit.
In an articulated vehicle, steering is accomplished by bending the vehicle about a pivotal point, and in consequence, is often referred to as frame steering This concept is not new as it existed as long ago as 1916, being used in a one-row cultivator machine by John Deere and; Company (Figure 6).
By means of an articulated hydraulic powered boom and grapple, the skidder operator loads the rear bunk of a wheeled tractor with the butts of trees.

Loader (equipment) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Instead, they steer by a hydraulically actuated pivot point set exactly between the front and rear axles.
This is referred to as "articulated steering" and allows the front axle to be solid, allowing it to carry a heavier weight.
Articulated steering also gives reduced turning radius (and therefore higher maneuverability) for a given wheelbase.

 STEERING CONSIDERATIONS
It is therefore relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive to utilize a steered rear axle as opposed to a non-steered trailer-type axle, and to actuate the steering automatically by mechanical linkage connected to the articulation joint or "bogie".
Thus the typical pusher articulated bus employs an A-axle steered by the driver, a non-steered B-axle near the rear of the front body and a non-steered driven C-axle in the rear body.
Because the puller's C-axle steers outward to reduce intrusion of the rear body inward while turning, the rear corner of the trailer must necessarily be displaced outward beyond the arc generated by the outer sidewall of the tractor.

Steering   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
4 wheel steering (or all wheel steering) is a system employed by some vehicles to increase vehicle stability while maneuvering at high speed, or to decrease turning radius at low speed.
Previously, Honda had four wheel steering as an option in their 1988-1994 Prelude, and Mazda also offered four wheel steering on the 626 in 1990.
Some vehicles now offer a form of "passive" four wheel steering, where the bushings by which the rear suspension attaches to the automobile are designed to compress in a precise direction under the forces of steering, thus slightly altering the rear suspension geometry in such a manner as to enhance stability.

Extreme flex and articulation of steering and suspension systems is inherent when vehicles must navigate over and around obstacles of significant size or sudden and abrupt changes in the geometry of the driving surface.
Articulated steering vehicles can currently be seen in many areas: NASA has used many such vehicles for exploration missions on the moon (both manned and unmanned) and Mars.
Since the tires of vehicles with articulated steering do not skid relative to the ground, it is expected that there would be less damage to driving surfaces and that traction control may be increased.

Throughout the history of articulated machines oscillation has been handled either by an oscillating axle or by a swivel in the hinge, usually fabricated by welding a large thick wall tubing to the hinge unit and having it turn on brass bushings in the rear unit.
The computer senses the angle of articulation, and the extent of steering on each axle, and the desired speed of the machine and commands the pumps to pump the right amount of oil to each wheel in order to execute the turn without wheel bind.
