Lange has a bizarre love/hate relationship with the crowd, berating all the people in Arizona for being “so damn good-looking” and often tells them to “f*** off,” but at the same time, it’s pretty obvious that he really has much love for his fans and knows they are where is bread is buttered.

As Stern's Everyman sidekick, Lange has a reprep to uphold as a profane, boozing-and-smoking man of the people, and, on that score, pic can't be surpassed.
Manganelli makes Artie easy to like, and it's the film's joke on the audience to make otherwise sensitive and thinking human beings willing to cheer on a guy who has to work extremely hard to be a gentleman by anyone's standards.
Lange looks relaxed in pic designed for the lower-than-lowbrow, as does supporting cast from Ralph Maccio as a soon-to-be married buddy to a hilariously profane Seymour Cassel as the team's elder statesman.

Lange asks, "Can't we be offensive anymore?" Short answer: Yes, he can, as witness his hysterical bit on Sesame Street's inclusion of an AIDS-diagnosed character to the Muppet ensemble ("Here's Grover with today's letters: H-I-V"), and his hilarious homophobic spin on a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon.
Lange is a raging bull onstage, but with his unshaven countenance and his rumpled jacket and jeans, he suggests another Robert De Niro character; Travis Bickle gone to seed.
Watching Artie here is like watching a train wreck: from shoveling down truckloads of processed meat to washing it down with his trademark Jack and water, the man is clearly in a lot of pain.
