		Plastikman's minimal thematic re-interpretation of classic underground Detroit techno on "Artifakts (bc)" polarizes him from the unintelligent, generic "electronica" currently being solicited by major labels.

		Another one of Ritchie Hawtins three releases in 1998, Artifakts (BC) is the conceptual bookend of the three-part series that started with his albums Sheet One and Musik.
		Although it came out in the same year as Consumed, this is music that was recorded prior to that album (BC as in, before Consumed) and had yet to be released due to some extenuating circumstances.
		If you have the other discs and are a fan, though, it's good to have to hear the progression (and see how it has even further morphed into Consumed).

		Overall, artifakts is an amazing studio production, with many of those ear-piercing samples, deep basslines and loads of sample filtering.
		Artifakts [bc] is a great album that's quite like Consumed before it, but more suited for the home or headphone listener.

		Maybe it'll be the same, but it also has the potential to be better, because it is a totally new experience not only for me but also for the crowd listening.
		You could reference it to that, but really Consumed is very very far away from that: it's being consumed by an idea, being consumed by the atmosphere which is represented on the album.
		That track on Artifakts is actually a second version of a track which I did in 1993, which was on the F.U.S.E. album.

		Sure enough, Artifakts (bc) is a great album, but it isn’t as funky as its predecessors.
		The first half of Artifakts is reminiscent of Consumed.

		Often the only white hanger-on in a predominantly fl dance scene, Hawtin was later instrumental in ushering in a more multiracial crossover success for techno in the Detroit area with events like his "Hard, Harder, Hardest" series of warehouse parties, forging a missing link of sorts between UK rave culture and classic Detroit techno.
		His fourth album chronologically, ARTIFAKTS conceptually falls between his second and third albums.
		It represents the completion of material left unfinished when he was barred from entering the US for performing illegally and subsequently cut off from releasing material through his Detroit-based label Plus 8.

		Artifacts (bc) rose, phoenix-like, from the ashes of the unfinished third Plastikman LP, Klinik, to become an intellectual bridge between Richie Hawtin's Musik and Consumed albums.
		Said casual listener is more likely to be put off by Artifakts (bc)'s minimalist trance techno sound -- the tracks are long and linear, the recording level is relatively low and the mood is subtle, even by Hawtin's standards.
		That's not to say that the disc is flat-out dull, but it's definitely a low-key affair -- certainly not the best starting point for electronic music newbies.
