Artificial limb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artificial limbs are a type of prosthesis and are classified by the type of amputated limb they would replace, for example:
Limbs and appendages are moved by muscles, which are stimulated by very small amounts of electricity (microvolts) from the nervous system.
Even if the limb or appendage is absent, the nerves and impulses controlling the missing limb are (usually) still there, and the brain can send microvolts of electricity to guide a "phantom" limb.

One model of artificial leg is made of layers of stockinette cloth coated with plastic; it has duraluminum joints at the knee and ankle, rubber soles on the feet, and a leather cuff cushioning the stump.
Artificial arms, not having to support the weight of the body, may be made of lighter metals and plastics.

Wired News: Embracing the Artificial Limb
"Basically the challenge of developing a prosthesis is blending it or creating this intimacy between the artificial device and the human," said Hugh Herr, an MIT assistant professor in the school's health sciences and technology department and director of the biomechatronics group in its Media Lab.
The idea for marrying an artificial limb to the human body sprang from the ideas of many different scientists, said Dr. Roy Aaron, an orthopedic professor at Brown Medical School and director of the project's Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine.
Those who've lost limbs currently view their prostheses as tools, not as parts of their own bodies, he said, adding that the group projects that when they can blend the two, amputees will "in a more profound way truly accept the artificial limb."
