Artificial reality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artificial reality was the term Myron W. Krueger used to describe his interactive immersive environments, based on video recognition techniques, that put a user in full, unencumbered contact with the digital world.
His first book Artificial Reality was published in 1983 and updated in Artificial Reality II in 1991 (both published by Addison-Wesley).
The term is occasionally used in New Age spirituality to describe the reality we are currently living in.

 Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is a surrounding computer-simulated ecology within which humans interact with computer-generated objects in a manner governed by sufficient computer reasoning that the interaction seems realistic.
Examples include a surgeon using virtual reality to operate at a micro-scale that would not be possible with unaided human hands or a pilot with a cloudy head-mounted-display that superimposes maps on the pilot's area of vision to guide navigation.
Virtual reality will generally also be a tremendous aid for development in the fields of engineering and manufacturing, configuration and construction, biotechnology and nanoscale pharmacology, chemistry and nanoscale modeling, medicine and bionics, the clothing sector, and the fine arts.

 Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality (VR) is an immersive biosphere within which a human can engage that is comprised of computer-simulated elements and is animated by a sufficiently high level of data processor rationality to seem realistic to the participating human.
Examples consist of a surgeon using virtual reality to operate at a micro-scale that would not be possible with unaided human hands or a pilot with a partially opaque head-mounted-display that superimposes maps on the pilot's discipline of vision to guide navigation.

City-Traffic: An Artificial Reality System of Traffic in an Urban Area
Artificial reality means reproducing the real world in detail on computers.
The state of the real system is continuously monitored by thousands of sensors (in the case of City-Traffic by induction loops, floating car data etc).
In a process similar to relaxation in mathematics, the state of the artificial system is kept almost identical to the state of the real system.

Telepresence differs from pure or mixed reality in that the artificial reality may be transparent to the participating human.
Thus, computational effort in artificial reality can be conserved without important loss in perceptual realism by rendering the surfaces of moving things in less detail than the surfaces of stationery objects.
Virtual reality will generally furthermore be a large aid for design in the fields of engineering and invention, architecture and construction, biotechnology and nano-pharmacology, chemistry and nanoscopic modeling, medicine and bionics, the clothing field, and the fine arts.

Artificial realities present a host of policy issues.
Another possibility is that the government may actually require some patients to enter an artificial reality under some circumstances.
For example, patients who cannot afford the uploading procedure may be uploaded by the government into artificial realities, which will no doubt be cheaper on the large scale than manufactured bodies.

Today, 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways and often in a confusing and misleading manner.
Originally, the term referred to 'Immersive Virtual Reality.' In immersive VR, the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer.
Telepresence systems (e.g., telemedicine, telerobotics) immerse a viewer in a real world that is captured by video cameras at a distant location and allow for the remote manipulation of real objects via robot arms and manipulators.
