Topic: Artificial respiration

  Artificial Respiration - MSN Encarta
Artificial Respiration, forcing of air into and out of the lungs of one person by another person or by mechanical means.
It is usually employed during suspension of natural respiration caused by disease, such as poliomyelitis or cardiac failure; by electric shock; by an overdose of depressive drugs such as morphine, barbiturates, or alcohol; or by suffocation resulting from drowning, breathing noxious gases, or blockage of the respiratory tract.
Mechanical devices for the administration of artificial respiration include a portable resuscitator used by police and fire departments and the heart-lung machine used to maintain oxygen saturation in the blood during open-heart surgery.

Artificial respiration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artificial respiration is a technique for providing air for a person who is not breathing on their own, but whose heart is still beating.
Artificial respiration is part of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but is also performed separately, especially in near-drowning and similar situations.
Artificial respiration is an essential skill in first aid.

artificial respiration any measure that causes air to flow in and out of a person's lungs when natural breathing is inadequate or ceases, as in respiratory paralysis, drowning, electric shock, choking, gas or smoke inhalation, or poisoning.
Respiration can be taken over by an artificial lung (especially in respiratory paralysis), a pulmotor, or any other type of mechanical respirator (see resuscitator).

Paget's recent case of death during the inhalation of chloroform, the patient continued to breathe after the pulse had ceased, and the artificial respiration was not effectual in restoring him.
When the failure of the pulse is the consequence of the absence of breathing, as in drowning, artificial respiration is the proper remedy, and I believe the method of Dr. Marshall Hall to be a very efficient one.
Such is the result of my experiments on animals; but where the heart itself is the organ chiefly or solely affected, artificial respiration, although affording a chance of benefit, is likely to be of little avail; and these apparently are the cases of accident which have ended fatally, notwithstanding prompt assistance.

Cardiac Arrest: First Aid: Merck Manual Home Edition
CPR combines artificial respiration, which supplies oxygen to the lungs, with chest compressions, which circulate oxygen to the brain and other vital organs by forcing blood out of the heart.
Artificial respiration is very similar in children and adults.
CPR can be performed by one person (who alternately performs artificial respiration and chest compressions) or by two people (one to perform artificial respiration and one to perform chest compressions).

How to perform CPR and artificial respiration in pets
CPR and artificial respiration are procedures that could save your pets life in an emergency situation.
CPR and/or artificial respiration are applied when the pet is unconscious. When faced with this situation there are a few steps you need to follow to determine which procedure needs to be implemented.
While one person can adequately undertake artificial respiration, it is better if 2 people are involved in CPR - one to do the breathing and one to do the heart massage.

 Optimizing artificial respiration
Artificial respiration may damage the alveoli and the endothelium of the capillaries, depending on the strategy employed.
However, the consequences of the different strategies for the extent of the damage and the effectiveness of the gas exchange are mostly unknown.
It is expected that the artificial respiration strategies will be identified that will minimize the mechanical stresses and pathophysiological reactions while optimizing the gas exchange.

Their study found that manual methods of artificial resuscitation had been ineffective in providing the necessary oxygen interchange and could not be used for extended periods of time.
Drinker and McKhann outlined several main objectives in their respirator design: long and steady function, adaptability to many ages and sizes, the ability to regulate the rate and depth of respiration, and the ability to provide proper artificial respiration without harming the patient.
In using the respirator, the patient lays flat on their back with their head lying on a stand outside of the lid of the tank, with a rubber collar providing a seal around their neck.

 Artificial respiration Summary
When someone has stopped breathing, medical personnel or trained laypersons may attempt to restart breathing or maintain weak breathing by using artificial respiration.
When the procedure is done by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, it is often referred to as rescue breathing; when accomplished by a mechanical device or machine, it is often referred to as ventilation.

(EN) An artificial respiration tube (10) which, at its lung end, has a pressure sensor (5) with electronic signal processing is used for continuously measuring the central respiratory tract pressure during assisted and controlled artificial respiration.
Unlike the respiratory tract pressure measured in the artificial respiration equipment, the continuously measured central respiratory tract pressure allows artificial respiration to be better adapted to the mechanical properties of the lungs and thorax.
As a whole, artificial respiration by means of a tracheal tube with an integrated electronic pressure sensor is safer and more confortable for the patient, without being more expensive.

 CPR: A Real Lifesaver
Here's what takes place during CPR: A person giving CPR — called a rescuer — will give some breaths to someone who is not breathing on his or her own.
This is called artificial respiration (say: ar-tuh-fih-shul res-puh-ray-shun), mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
In this way, the rescuer can keep the person alive by continuing to supply blood and oxygen to the brain and the rest of the body, until emergency help — like the paramedics — arrives to take the person to a hospital.
