Scorched Earth download @ Game Downloads
Scorched Earth is a simple, yet very exciting artillery combat game, based on a long line artillery games that began with Atari's classic arcade game Lunar Lander.
Basically, Scorched Earth is a type of war game which involves you as the commander of a 2D missile unit, with an objective of blowing up anything in sight that’s not on the same team as you.
It’s a game where you have a go, then wait for your opponent, and if they haven’t hit you, you get another go.

 Don't Be a Vidiot
LITTLE WARS, published in 1911, and FLOOR GAMES, in 1913, were very simple, indeed minimalist rules sets with differential movement rates for infantry, cavalry, and artillery, a very simple algorithm for the resolution of melee, and artillery fire through the use of spring-loaded cannon.
The key novel notion behind D&D, and the roleplaying games industry it spawned, was to have each player control a single character in an imaginary world--to play, in other words, not with a set of components or, as in a wargame, as the commander of an imaginary army, but as a single living person.
Non-electronic games have been around far longer than electronic ones; and far more gaming styles have been explored in non-electronic media, if for no other reason than the fact that you can develop a non-electronic game on a budget of a few bucks for paper and cardboard and ink.

Desert Rats Vs Afrika Korps PC Video Game Review by AceGamez
These units can't be built in game, they have to be picked before each mission where everything from tanks, artillery, infantry and support vehicles are all available to choose from, with a total of 70 unit types in all.
Infantry is incredibly weak against armoured units and for a game that relies mainly on large tank battles this proves to be quite a problem.
But that's not to say this game is as soulless as other RTS titles that have used a similar approach, it's still a difficult game and tank rushes do have to be thought out first, seeing as reinforcements are a luxury this game has to live without.

And now the Christian computer game developer called Digital Praise has partnered with Focus on the Family to bring out a new line of interactive games based on the popular "Adventures in Odyssey" radio series.

Unfortunately, sometimes the games in question don't actually supply you with a key to inform you of which symbol means what type of unit, so it can mean a lot of flicking between screens until you learn them for yourself.
The armour symbol is also used in other unit symbols, as shown in the mechanized infantry and the self-propelled artillery to indicate intrinsic armoured transport.
It's no good sending that tank unit to attack that mechanized infantry unit, as your tank unit could be a platoon of four tanks, whereas the infantry unit could be a mechanized battalion consisting of over eight hundred personnel.

The first artillery games for personal computers were likely homebrew efforts by BASIC programmers, some of whom published the source code of their games in computer magazines.
It was up to the readers to manually type the game into their computer’s RAM and then, if one were lucky enough to have such devices, save the file to a cassette tape (otherwise, the entire game would have to be typed in again when the computer was turned off).
Scorched Earth may not live up to its self-claimed title, “The Mother of all Games,” but it is certainly the mother of modern artillery games.
