Most artillery officers were very slow to receive promotion due to the relatively light casualties and "turnover" in the long arm as compared to the infantry.
If the battery happened to be short an officer due to leave, sickness, or death, the first sergeant took up the duties of the chief of the line of caissons by direction of the captain.
However, once the artillery line was established the drivers would often dismount and lay on the ground with their reins in their hands, depending on the amount of hostile fire being received.

In 1901, the Artillery was divided into Coast and Field Artillery and the branch insignia was modified by the addition of a plain scarlet oval at the intersection of the cannons.
The Manual for Mountain Artillery, adopted by the U.S. Army in 1851, stated that the mountain howitzer was "generally transported by mules." The superiority of mules in rough country outweighed their notorious contrariness under fire.
When a battery unlimbered and took its place in line, the horses were ordinarily moved to a place sheltered from direct enemy fire--behind a building or hill, in a copse of trees or in a ravine.

 Field Artillery in the Civil War
Late in the war it was not unusual for batteries to be reduced to four guns, due to shortage of available horses (the government paid $160 for a Cavlary horse, but $170 for an Artillery horse).
When horses were in short supply, (a battery needed about 125) mules could be used, though they tended to shy in battles, so horses were used for the guns (leading to four gun batteries in part of 1864 and again in 1865).
The Tenth Mass Battery went through about 400 horses (battle casualties, exhaustion and disease) during the course of the war, and when turning in their horses at the end of the war, had only one of the original 110 they had left Massachusetts with.

The limber for field service is basically a two-wheeled cart, simply an axle, with its wheels, surmounted by a framework for holding an ammunition chest and receiving the tongue.
In addition to the limbers and caisson, each battery normally had one wagon and one forge, and they were expected to accompany the battery wherever it went.
The battery wagon, also drawn by a limber, is a long bodied cart with a rounded top, which contains the saddlers' and carriage makers' tools, spare parts, extra harness, and rough materials for fabricating parts.

Annaversary of the Assault on Battery Wagner, a cooperative effort with the 54th.
Regiment S.C. Artillery reenacts the history of the men who manned the artillery of the Confederate defenses of the S.C. Coast, including enormous guns like This One (see picture) at the Battery at Charleston and this Cannon (see picture) at Ft. Moultrie where the unit made its headquarters.
The unit is also the signal crew for the Charleston Battery minor league soccer team, firing its gun to mark the goals scored by the team during its spring and summer games.
