A&R - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artist and repertoire (AandR for short) is a music industry term that refers to the division of a record label that is responsible for scouting and developing talent.
The AandR department is the link between the recording artist/act and the record label, and is often required to handle contractural negotiations, find songwriters and record producers for the act, and schedule recording sessions.
In some more artistic record labels, creativity is encouraged and songwriting and record producing is done by the artists.

 Tips From COMA
No record deal is offered at first; but the Artist is approached or approaches an independent producer who offers, at the Artist's sole expense and risk, to produce or co-produce a master recording which the producer, through his contacts, then shops to either an independent record company or one of the six major record distributors.
The Artist is approached, not by an independent producer; but by a record company representative directly for consideration of a recording contract for which the record company either recommends an in-house producer or an independent producer.
The Artist is a star or has such a reputation in the music business that s/he can dictate the terms and conditions of the record contract and the record company is more than willing to sign the Artist who will increase the record company's reputation.

 A&R Primer
Repertoire is a leftover from the days when most performers didn't write their own music, drawing instead from a body of songs, or repertoire, written by others.
That process included helping the artists develop their sound and refine their appearance, as well as generally nurturing them through the record-making and promotion process.
Labels want to hedge their bets, so they hook the artist up with several producers and hope that at least one track hits the top ten with a bullet.

 The Cover Story
In the early days of radio, when few people had the means to play pre-recorded music in their homes, the purpose of the singer was to popularize the song, not the recording.
In order to keep these artists supplied with material, songwriters' songs were pitched to A&R (artist and repertoire) men.
Sometimes an artist will adopt a cover as a set-piece in the live show, such as Freedy Johnston's trademark cover of the Jimmy Webb-penned Glenn Campbell hit "Wichita Lineman." When The Presidents of the United States of America perform Iggy Pop's "TV Eye," only a handful in the audience recognize it.

The AandR (Artiste and Repertoire) Department is generally the first point of contact with a record company for any aspiring new artist.
New artists who are also songwriters may perhaps choose to target these AandR publishers also (many of whom are friendly with record company AandR staff, and communicate with each other on a regular basis with regard to interesting new acts).
Artist managers must therefore seek to receive a tangible level of backing and support from their AandR representative.

Breaking an artist in one country - and then internationally — is the crucial way in which record companies finance their future development of new and upcoming artists.
In Europe, it is estimated that developing artists and repertoire accounts for some 12-15% of record company turnover — a level more than three times higher, proportionately, than the research and development costs of the car, steel and chemicals industries, and higher than in the most research-intensive sectors such as pharmaceuticals and aerospace.

Many stars of yesteryear whose songs are still covered by major artists today are still paid on the basis of their original contracts and receive pennies rather than pounds in royalties.
