  Artistic Freedom
Artistic expression needs protection within the university as it is vulnerable to suppression, the public nature of performance or display making it a target for attacks.
The college theatre director's freedom of artistic expression clearly can be threatened by local censorship efforts, for example, when the performance of a play is challenged through reference to community standards.
However, it is in the best interest of the theatre and artistic freedom if playwrights limit their interference with other people's stagings of their plays and do not excessively restrict other directors in pursuing their own interpretations and stagings of published play scripts.

His notion of "freedom" is basically bourgeois and on the same level as Jimmy Carter's hypocritical concern for "human rights" everywhere but in the U.S. and its puppet dictatorships abroad.
Several centuries ago, artistic freedom meant freedom from the whims and immediate demands of a patron, who slight want a sonata for a birthday party or a miniature painted to send a current lover.

The artistic freedom voucher (AFV) is an alternative mechanism for supporting creative and artistic work.
Copyright protection is one way that the government uses to support creative and artistic work, the AFV is a second way.
The AFV would immediately create a pool of money (approximately $20 billion annually) to support creative and artistic workers that is far larger than the amount that currently flows to them through copyright-protected material.

 Artistic Freedom
Today, we are reaping the harvest of that backlash as rap singers and museum directors are prosecuted for "obscenity," performance artists are denied government grants and Congress passes new censorship laws.
The First Amendment declares that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press," and the Fourteenth Amendment extends that prohibition to state and local governments.
But even more pervasive is the "chilling effect" that vague standards have on writers and artists, pressuring them to engage in selfcensorship to avoid running afoul of a legal definition that means different things to different people.

In recent years the party of Reagan and Goldwater has strayed from its Hayekian and classically liberal roots to form a rival behemoth to the liberal monolith that dominated the United States for the first half of the century.
And it is through the protection of art, it is through literature, it is through debate, it is through love and passion and the blinding intellectual light of creativity that Truth is brought to life and conquers the lies that would use chains or guns or anything else to constrain It.
Whether the issue is homosexuality or Christianity, the second we start to use the state to silence the explosive power of art is the second we risk our place as freedom fighters and render ourselves no better than the fascism and tyranny we spent a century to overcome.

Showtime's biggest hit is the soap opera "Queer as Folk." Like the transgressive shows on HBO, this series is successful precisely because its content is too controversial for an over-the-air network.
