Oliphant became the founding principal of the school in 1959, eight years after moving to the country from her native London, England.

The name is somewhat misleading, particularly in its implied geographical limitation; the Hudson River Valley, from New York to the Catskill Mountains and beyond, was the symbolic and actual centre of the school but was not the only area visited and painted by these artists.
