Arto Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arto Records was a short lived record label based in the United States of America, from 1920 to 1923.
Arto Records was owned by the Arto Company of Orange, New Jersey which in turn was owned by the Standard Music Roll Company, a business which made player piano rolls.
Arto Records also pressed masters for other record companies, including Nordskog Records.

Nordskog Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nordskog Records was a small record label based in California in the early 1920s that produced some interesting historic recordings.
Nordskog had no record pressing plant, and indeed there were none located in the western United States at the time.
Among the records which survived to be pressed were the only recordings of Eva Tanguay, early sides by Abe Lyman's Orchestra, and a number of recordings by Kid Ory's band.

Arto Lindsay has made a lifelong habit of crossing both geographical and musical borders.
Born in the United States and raised in Brazil during the heyday of that country's pointedly eclectic Tropicália movement of the 1960s, the multi-faceted songwriter/producer/vocalist/guitarist has forged an international reputation as an artist whose work is as seductive as it is challenging.
From his late '70s recordings of abrasive "no wave" through his acclaimed series of solo albums beginning in the late '90s, Lindsay has bonded rhythms and melodies from diverse cultures and genres in provocative new ways, crafting inimitable soundscapes whose impact can range from fragile pop pleasure to sheer sonic assault.

While Arto was in the Folk Music Studies program at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, students were required to form ensembles, and Niekku was the group of original students.
Unlike a lot of the younger folk musicians, Arto came from a family that could trace its fiddlers back over 120 years, giving Arto the advantage of learning the folk styles while simultaneously developing advanced digital technique through classical studies, and not being "ruined" by the latter.
Arto tends to play a lot of mandolin in the Pinnan Pojat duo, which pairs him up with a harmonica player.

Recording companies often invest a lot of time and money in discovering new talent or developing the talent of artists already under contract.
Many times, the record label's decisions are correct ones, but this typically frustrates the artist who feels that their artwork is being destroyed.
In the early days of the recording industry, record labels were absolutely necessary for the success of any artist.

Arto's record The Subtle Body was released in Japan last year on Ryuichi Sakamoto's label, and it has done quite well there.
The record is thoughtful and fairly restrained, roughly in a Brazilian style as opposed to Arto's noise/downtown rock.
Arto Lindsay has been a mainstay of the NY "downtown" scene since the days of No Wave, which makes him something of a father figure to bands like Sonic Youth.

arto is on at least one lounge lizards record (the self-titled one) and is featured prominently on one golden palominos record.
Arto's playing on the first Lounge Lizards is what makes the record, I think, quite remarkable and not jazz (without Arto, the record would have made all the jazz critics right on the point).

African American Registry: Lucille Hegamin, a Georgia Blues singer
She cut "The Jazz Me Blues" and "Everybody's Blues" for Arto Records in November of that year, just a few months after Mamie Smith had recorded "Crazy Blues," the first blues song to appear on disc.
Although not a pure blues singer in the tradition of, say, Bessie Smith, Hegamin seemed as comfortable singing the blues as she was singing the pop and vaudeville hits of the day.
In all, Hegamin recorded some forty songs with Cameo before she slid from the scene in the 1930s.
