This area was, we learn, 'a mixture of culture, art, vice and dissipation,' where the entertainments ranged from brothels and alehouses to bear-baiting and playhouses.
Maps show the locations of taverns, inns and other popular stops, and artifacts unearthed from the area - mugs, money pots, and mastiff skulls (the dogs were used in the bear-baiting), pie molds and bowling balls, daggers, spoons and whistles, leather shoes, gloves and jerkins - give a tangible sense of daily life here.
We got to admire the intricate art of the seats and the stage decorations - exquisitely carved railings, wooden columns painted to look like marble, brilliant overhead depictions of the sun, the moon, the stars and the circle of the zodiac.

Ex-Harmon Industries building will become center for the arts - 1997-09-29   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The one-time Harmon Industries building, 225 W. Lewis, is gradually being transformed from its current red-brick look into the arts center dubbed "CityArts" -- with the help of $300,000 in city funds and an equal amount of private donations.
The transformation into the art center began this summer, with inmate labor from the Winfield Correctional Facility gutting the interior to clear 19,000 square feet of open space on the first floor and another 3,000 square feet on a second-floor mezzanine level.
Because the old Harmon building is in fact a conglomeration of "four generations" of construction, the designers were plagued with finding a way to blend different colors of bricks and building features into a whole, said Bill Livingston, president and chief executive officer of Gossen Livingston and Associates, architects on the project.
