Seattle, the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, is the region's commercial, financial, transportation, and industrial hub and a major port of entry, important in both East Asian and Alaskan trade.
Long a center of radical labor movements, Seattle was the scene of a major general strike (1919) led by the Industrial Workers of the World.
The city is a cultural center with numerous museums and art galleries, including a Frank Gehry-designed rock music museum; a variety of theater and musical organizations; and an arboretum, a zoo, and the Central Library (2004, by Rem Koolhaas).

Chief Seattle gave his famous speech in December 1854 in downtown Seattle, when he was in his late fifties or early sixties.
Chief Seattle was always intrigued by Europeans and their culture, and he later became good friends with Doc Maynard, the progressive, hard-drinking entrepreneur who more than anyone helped establish the city of Seattle.

 Seattle residents love arts, reluctant to pull out wallet
The Performing Arts Research Coalition is surveying residents of 10 American cities -- Anchorage is the only other Northwest city --to assess attitudes toward the arts and suggest better ways for arts organizations to increase their audiences and donations.
While the highest percentage of frequent arts attendees are in the 55-64 age group, the two age groups that register the highest percentage of attendance to at least one arts event were 45-54 and under 25.
Just as it is often assumed there is a graying of arts audiences, it is often assumed there is some great divide between those who attend performing arts events and those who attend other forms of entertainment.

Many of the candidates and the public in general are discussing the critical issues in the arts outside of funding, existing projects, and city-centered efforts to improve the arts landscape.
Benaroya Hall, Seattle Art Museum, ACT Theater, and similar venues and programs are hefty recipients of funds while programs and options for low-income and emerging artists remain flat, restrictive and irregular.
