  Artur Grottger
[...] Artur Grottger, [...] the significance of his art for national consciousness is comparable only with the impact of the great Matejko canvases.
Alongside a modest number of paintings, the most important achievement of his short life are cycles of drawings whose themes are connected with the events of the 1863 January Uprising: Warsaw I, Warsaw II, Polonia, Lithuania, and War.
The simple crayon technique and the small scale of the Grottger cartoons are supported by a photographic reproduction technique, which, despite censorship restrictions, assured widespread reception.

Grottger's watercolor The Entry of Francis Joseph into Lwów (1851), brought him an imperial scholarship in 1852, enabling him to continue his studies in the Kraków School of Fine Arts, under Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz [1828—1900] and Wojciech Kornel Stattler [1800—1875].
Early in his career Grottger painted numerous battle-scenes, in oil and watercolor, whose landscape sections are frequently inept, but whose horses, riders, and fighting cavalry are depicted with great vitality and sense of movement.

NCAW Autumn 02 | Irena Kossowska reviews Early Modern Polish Art
Cavanaugh's account clearly demonstrates that Polish fin-de-siècle art was not homogeneous in terms of its content and form, due in large part to the development of symbolism and expressionism alongside the centuries-old folk tradition and the decorative Art Nouveau style.
The author explains how the role of the national iconographic tradition—exemplified in the patriotic cycles of Artur Grottger (1860s) and the historical paintings of Jan Matejko (1870s, 1880s)—was challenged in the late nineteenth century by innovative aesthetic theories and modernist aims.
Cavanaugh refers to the battle for appreciation of purely aesthetic qualities and primacy of formal values over ideological ends fought in the 1880s by Stanislaw Witkiewicz, who, by arguing in favor of artistic autonomy, anticipated the concept of "pure art" expressed by modernist theoreticians in the 1900s.

It too referred to the Polish national anthem, but more obliquely than with the Elgar, and was also called Polonia.
It appears likely that this title was borrowed from a series of eight 'cartoons' by Artur Grottger (1837-1867), whose work portrayed the realism of everyday life and struggle under Russian occupation.
His Polonia (published in 1863), with individual pictures called 'Forging the Scythes' or 'After the Enemy has Withdrawn', was an immediate response to the failed insurrection of 1863/4, known as the January Rising.
