By the 1920's, Artur Rubinstein was firmly established on the international concert circuit and was described in the 1924 edition of Modern Music and Musicians as 'one of the most celebrated pianists of our time', but as yet, he had made no gramophone recordings.
For years Rubinstein had lived out of a suitcase, basing his playing on temperament and natural facility but in 1932 at the age of 45 he married and began to take stock of his artistic achievements.

Artur Rubinstein made his reputation by having emphasized the grandiose, the soft and tender, to produce an effect that became easily understandable and clearly communicated while playing.
It was recorded in the same year, according to his first volume of self-reflection, that he bested Ignaz Friedman in a shared concert (which he remembers from the audience's noise and alludes to not having heard a note of Friedman's playing).
In the long run Rubinstein will be viewed as a popularizer who introduced great music and created a love for it among many who otherwise might have remained equivocal to the classical and romantic repertoire.

Rubinstein's music demonstrates none of the nationalism of The Five, and in fact he spoke out against Russian nationalism, leading to arguments with Mily Balakirev and others who felt that his establishment of a Conservatory in St. Petersburg would damage Russian musical traditions.
