Durante a ditadura varguista, Bernardes teve seus movimentos severamente vigiados pelos órgãos de segurança, chegando a ser obrigado a se confinar em sua fazenda em Viçosa.

Em março de 1897, uma investida malsucedida das forças federais contra os sertanejos rebelados de Canudos - apontados como deflagradores de uma grande conspiração contra a República - provocou o envio de dois batalhões da polícia de Minas para o interior da Bahia, em apoio às tropas federais.
Durante dois anos e meio Bernardes exerceu a advocacia, viajando constantemente pelas comarcas vizinhas.

Artur da Silva Bernardes (Viçosa, 8 de agosto de 1875 — Rio de Janeiro, 23 de março de 1955) foi um político brasileiro, presidente da República Federativa do Brasil entre 15 de novembro de 1922 e 15 de novembro de 1926.
Participou da chamada Revolução de 1930, que deslocou a oligarquia paulista do domínio federal; no entanto, a seguir participou da Revolução Constitucionalista de 1932.
Com o reestabelecimento da democracia em 1945 elegeu-se novamente deputado, cargo que ocupou até a morte, em 1955.

Pessoa graduated with honors from the Faculty of Law in Recife (1886) and served as public prosecutor at Bom Jardim and the District of Cabo in Pernambuco (1887-1889).
The closure of the Military Club and the arrest of ex-president Hermes Rodrigues da Fonseca eventually led to the revolt in the Copacabana Fort (2 Jul 1922), which marked the beginning of the tenente movement.
