Wolfgang Lempfrid: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (DLF)

One of the most enigmatic performers of the twentieth century, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was also one of the most compelling and, paradoxically, one of the least-heard pianists of his generation.
Michelangeli was famous for having canceled nearly as many performances as he gave, and he committed little of his vast repertory to disc.
Michelangeli took his role as a mentor very seriously; he held various teaching positions in Italy and throughout Europe, and included Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini among his pupils.

One may even compare Benedetti Michelangeli's style to Messiaen's postulates, such is his exactness in the choice of the timbre, fixed by him not only as a colour which orientates the listener's perception, but as a value per se.
Benedetti Michelangeli's art presents paradoxical and hermetical aspects (together with elements of immediate and strong suggestion), which renders its critical analysis quite arduous.
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's art is marvellous, not for any particular characteristic, but for that ability to synthesis and that completeness that are the point of force of his personality.

Yet it is certain the former occupation and the latter both share the same attraction in that it is rather unusual for pianist to overlook neither sentiments nor objectivity.
It should prove for the fairness to Michelangeli that what he had of good-for-bad or bad-for-good, in its entirety, always fell short of what really Michelangeli presented to his audience.

The "Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli" Documentation Centre
Consequently, if, from then, nothing were done in Italy and in Europe to arouse the renewed interest of scholars, musicians and enthusiasts, even a giant such as Benedetti Michelangeli could run the risk before very long of being neglected or underestimated by historiography and by musical critics.
For this reason, in the spring of 1999, the "Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli" Documentation Centre was set up in Brescia, and has now become an international point of reference for the collection of sources and authentic testimonies concerning the Maestro, and for publicising books, studies and essays on his art.
On 15th November 2003 the Centre organized a one-day study on The piano art of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in cooperation with Teche Rai, Province of Brescia and Fondazione Civiltà Bresciana; among the speakers invited were such well-known experts as Sergio Sablich and Luca Chierici.

For Beethoven, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's outsized dynamics, overwrought articulation, and plain old-fashioned breaking of hands at lyrical moments frequently transform the music's red-blooded lyricism and brio into statuesque, sonatalike replicas preserved in formaldehyde.
When it came to Debussy and Ravel, however, Michelangeli was a genius.
Michelangeli plays the daunting opus absolutely straight, orchestrating the sonorities, the tricky balances, and dynamics with awesome technical finesse and masterly control of color and nuance.
