Now married for 50 years, Arturo and Rina were once students and assistants of Frida and Diego, respectively, and remained friends and members of their artistic community until their deaths.
Arturo is still an active muralist; recent work of his has been installed at the Palace of the Governors in Oaxaca.

El pintor mexicano Arturo García Bustos, uno de los alumnos de la maestra Kahlo, conocidos como los “fridos”, dijo a EFE que el homenaje luctuoso que se le rindió en aquel entonces a la artista en el vestíbulo del Palacio de Bellas Artes fue muy emotivo.
García Bustos explicó que además de discursos y sonetos en honor a Kahlo, se cantaron el himno nacional mexicano y la canción revolucionaria “Corrido de Cananea”.
García Bustos, quien conoció a la pintora en 1943, agrega que uno de los momentos más conmovedores en el adiós a Frida fue cuando María Asúnsolo —musa de Rivera, el pintor David Alfaro Siqueiros y el poeta Pablo Neruda— empezó a entonar el himno nacional mexicano y de inmediato fue coreado por los presentes.

In 1980, the artist, Arturo Garcia Bustos, decorated the interior walls of the Palace’s main staircase, which leads to the upper level.
Garcia Bustos painted a second mural in 1987 on the ceiling and walls of the side staircase, which leads to the east patio of the Government Palace.

At the time I didn’t know why his work was so intriguing to me. It was filled with stylized forms and very bright colors.
During my formative years, I was honored with the teachings, guidance and friendship of some of the most influential artists of Mexico: Arturo Estrada, Alfredo Zalce, Francisco Zuñiga, Ricardo Martinez de Hoyos, Arturo Garcia Bustos, Rina Lazo, Tomas Zurian, Arnold Belkin, Feliciano Bejar and many others.
With 1979 came the opportunity to visit Italy and, joining my friends Fernando Barragan and Giovanni Miceli in their Florence studio, I gained first hand experience in their techniques in bronze casting sculpture, dry point and aquatint printmaking, and magnificent Eggplant Parmigiana.

Al lado de Rivera, y también de García Bustos, con quien como artista nos ayudamos, nos comprendemos conservando nuestra propia personalidad, fui adentrándome en la escuela mexicana, que es figurativa y en la que la temática es importante y el artista trata de expresar una idea concreta al alcance del público.
García Bustos fue mi maestro de grabado, él, a su vez, era discípulo de Leopoldo Méndez y había participado del Taller de Gráfica Popular.
