Arturo Merzario - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arturo Merzario (born in Civenna, Como, March 11, 1943) was a Formula One driver from Italy.
He participated in 84 grands prix, debuting on July 15, 1972.
When he could no longer find a drive with established teams, he set up his own Merzario team which competed in Formula One for two years.

The team was run by Gianfranco Palazzoli and Merzario managed to qualify in eight of the 16 races, although he failed to finish a race.
Merzario failed to qualify the car and Gianfranco Brancatelli had a similar experience when he drove the car in qualifying at Monaco.
In the mid-season Merzario bought the Kauhsen F1 project and the Merzario A4 was based on this car, although modifications were made to the design by Giampaolo Dallara.

 8W - What? - Merzario
Arturo Merzario was the exception to a rule which only started working well after Little Art was ousted from the team in turmoil.
Merzario, who had joined the scarlet team in late 1972, got stuck in the middle and saw a successful sportscar career in the Prancing Horse's 312P combined with being Ickx's Barrichello come to a sorry end.
Merzario himself made a subdued comeback to the race track a few years ago, nowadays racing Centenari and Debora open-top sportscars in the SR2 class of the ISRS, FIA SportsRacing Cup and FIA Sportscar Championship.

Merzario was partnered with Jacky Ickx in 008 and had it not have been for overworking the brakes and necessitating a change of pads late in the proceedings the pairing would have tasted victory instead of claiming the runners up spot.
Merzario and Laffite continued their winning streak in 008 at the Monza 1000km a fortnight later, indeed the near faultless run was only temporarily interrupted by the need to bleed the brakes thanks to an aggressive middle stint by Merzario.
Unfortunately Merzario was not as confident in such conditions and thus the duo were outpaired by their teammates into second place by the finish.

As the season continued, Merzario had to settle for a qualifying position in the second half of the grid, while the second car rarely made it onto the grid at all.
Throughout the year, Laffite had Arturo Merzario, Ian Scheckter, Francois Migault, Ian Ashley, Jo Vonlanthen, Renzo Zorzi and Lella Lombardi as teammates, with Tony Brise and Damien Magee also making appearances in the Williams.

ISO, which had became the Frank Williams Racing Team, was a very mixed team, with the Italian, Arturo Merzario, the Frenchman, Jacques Lafitte, and the South-African Ian Schekter, who was none other than the brother of Jody Schekter of the Tyrrell team.
The Wolf WR6 of Jody Schekter and Keke Rosberg, the Surtees TS20 of Vittorio Brambilla and the Williams FW06 of Alan Jones, were also present, along with three new teams: the Arrows Ford A1 of Ricardo Patrese, the Merzario Ford A1 of Arturo Merzario, and the French Martini Ford MK23 of René Arnoux.
But it was mostly the brand new Lotus JPS 79 which was to upset the status quo in 1978, since it was to literally sweep away all the competition.

Arturo - if you check the rules I posted above, you'll see that by implication, they forbid the marshals from pushing the car, other than to get it to the side of the road where it had stopped.
Arturo's second point - coming from someone with direct knowledge of the track - tends to support the hypothsis that Giunti was not overtaking Parkes, but that Parkes suddenly slowed and that Giunti, in order to avoid him, pulled out from his slipstream and passed threby creating the impression of overtaking.
