 Stewart: Origins of Cybernetics
One of the first indications of the new science which was to develop occurs in this paper with the sentence "The broad classes of behaviour are the same in machines and in living organisms" followed by "While the behaviouristic analysis of machines and living organisms is largely uniform, their functional study reveals deep differences".
Rosenblueth and Wiener had kept before them the idea of a research program which would use the efforts of many different kinds of scientist to attack subject matter left out by the traditional division of labour.

 ASC: Foundations: History of Cybernetics
It was Arturo Rosenblueth's presentation of ideas he'd been developing with Norbert Wiener and Julian Bigelow that drew everyone's attention.
Rosenblueth outlined a conceptual agenda based on similarities between behaviors of both machines and organisms that were interpretable as being 'goal-directed'.
Rosenblueth's presentaton resonated with everyone present - most particularly with Bateson and McCulloch, each of whom immediately saw linkages between these new concepts and issues in their respective fields.

Wiener and Rosenblueth - Migraine Aura   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The work of Norbert Wiener and Arturo Rosenblueth on "The mathematical formulation of the problem of conduction of impulses in a network of connected excitable elements, specifically in cardiac muscle" (Wiener and Rosenblueth, 1946) was the starting point of theoretical research in this field.
A few years before Rosenblueth wrote the paper with Wiener, he was one of the supervisors of a young Brazilian PhD student, Aristides A. Leão, who worked in the department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School (Somjen, 2005).
The model of Wiener and Rosenblueth describes the propagation of an excitable wave.

Impressed by this disease of the machine, Wiener asked Rosenblueth whether such behavior was found in man. The response was affirmative: in the event of certain injuries to the cerebellum, the patient cannot lift a glass of water to his mouth; the movements are amplified until the contents of the glass spill on the ground.
Their purpose was to approach the study of living organisms from the viewpoint of a servomechanisms engineer and, conversely, to consider servomechanisms with the experience of the physiologist.
One man working with Rosenblueth in getting these seminars under way was the neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch, who was to play a considerable role in the new field of cybernetics.

His friendship with the physiologist Arturo Rosenbluth, and their shared dream of stimulating such interdisciplinary pursuits, catalyzed the origins of cybernetics.
Dr. Arturo Rosenblueth replied that there was exactly such a pathological condition named (meaningfully) the purpose tremor, associated with injuries to the cerebellum (a part of the brain involved with balance and muscular coordination).
Wiener, Bigelow, and Rosenblueth's model, although indirectly derived from top-secret war work, had such general and far-reaching implications that it was published under the title "Behavior, Purpose and Technology," in 1943, in the normally staid journal Philosophy of Science.

Cybernetics - A Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The term itself began its rise to popularity in 1947 when Norbert Wiener used it to name a discipline apart from, but touching upon, such established disciplines as electrical engineering, mathematics, biology, neurophysiology, anthropology, and psychology.
Wiener, Arturo Rosenblueth, and Julian Bigelow needed a name for their new discipline, and they adapted a Greek word meaning "the art of steering" to evoke the rich interaction of goals, predictions, actions, feedback, and response in systems of all kinds (the term "governor" derives from the same root) [Wiener 1948].
Early applications in the control of physical systems (aiming artillery, designing electrical circuits, and maneuvering simple robots) clarified the fundamental roles of these concepts in engineering; but the relevance to social systems and the softer sciences was also clear from the start.
