Aru and Kei don't seem to have any Dutch colonial era buildings, but Banda many: the houses of the Dutch nutmeg plantation owners.
Because the people on the islands have very few possessions, they recycle most items naturally - not by collecting up and re-making the basic materials but by re-using the items themselves, such as re-using plastic bags, keeping old bottles for storage, sewing torn umbrella covers together to a sail for a canoe.
The most beautiful islands we have encountered so far are the Banda Islands with their volcano and lovely harbour.

It is therefore clear that the Paradisea apoda is confined to the southern peninsula of New Guinea and the Aru Islands, while the Paradisea papuana inhabits only the northern peninsula, with one or two of the islands (most probably) near its northern extremity.
It is interesting to observe, that though the Ké Islands and Goram approach nearer to New Guinea than Aru, no species of the Paradise birds are found upon them,--pretty clearly showing that these birds have not migrated to the islands beyond New Guinea in which they are now found.

It is likely that the historically documented role of Aru in regional trading systems has considerable antiquity, which may have begun with two-way maritime voyaging and trade as early as 20,000 years ago (as it does in Island Melanesia).
Fishers from the eastern part of Indonesian were certainly visiting the islands and fringing reef prior to European discovery in the early 1800's and continue to do so today.
The outcome of this paper is an awareness of the islands' significance to the military archaeology of the region.
