Arun Gawli, known to his followers as "Daddy", is a notorious gangster from Mumbai, India.
Gawli's rise in prominence is believed to be due to his "native roots" as a localite, which makes him distinct from most other non-Marathi-speaking dons.
Gawli was at one point actively supported by Bal Thackeray, but his links to Thackeray and Shiv Sena were later broken when "Daddy"'s boys mercilessly slew several Sena legislators and party workers.

Don-turned-politician Arun Gawli on Tuesday underwent a lie-detection test at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Bangalore in connection with a case of hatching conspiracy with aspiring actor Preeti Jain to kill film director Madhur Bhandarkar.
Gawli is understood to have been questioned about the letter allegedly issued by him two months ago dismissing co-accused Naresh Pardeshi from the post of Shakha Pramukh of his party and his phone conversations with Pardesi and Preetii during the period when the plot was allegedly hatched to kill Bhandarkar.
Mumbai Police had recorded Gawlis statement some time ago, but was not satisfied with his reply and asked him to undergo the test at FSL on January 23, but the MLA from Chinchpoli bought time stating that he was busy with court proceedings.

August 14: Arun Gawli, a notorious gangster, facing charges of gunning down a businessman, was discharged last week by a local court as there was no evidence against him.
Gawli and his henchmen were accused of having killed Parvez, friend of former corporator Rustom Tirandaz at the latter's hotel at Byculla on October 27, 1987.
Gawli secured bail in the case, but continues to languish in jail because he has opted not to furnish bond or sureties in view of threat to his life.
