Among the many battles Shourie fought for press freedom, perhaps the most famous was his crusade against the government’s proposal in 1988 to introduce a defamation bill.

Shourie said the "standards of evidence and scrutiny" applied by CAG "seem to differ a great deal" if one were to consider the CAG report (of May 2004) on disinvestment in the Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) by the Congress Government of Delhi.
Shourie said during an interaction with The Hindu that at every stage of disinvestment in all enterprises, decisions were taken after consultations with a committee of joint secretaries, a committee of secretaries headed by the Cabinet Secretary, the Cabinet Committee on Disinvestment and finally the Cabinet itself, as had been the practice since 1991.
Shourie said that in many instances of disinvestment, including that of Centaur, opponents of the disinvestment policy employed threats, violence and obstruction, leading to the withdrawal of potential bidders and leaving a single bidder in the field.

Arun Shourie (born 1941) is a prominent journalist, author, and politician of India.
Shourie’s exposés resulted in a prolonged labour dispute at the Bombay offices of the Indian Express, where a labour organizer with ties to Antulay encouraged workers to strike for a minimum wage double than what was paid at any other newspaper in India.
Shourie is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Arun Shourie, a minister in the present BJP government in India, and sometime editor of the Indian Express newspaper, came to Boston this summer to accept a prestigious award.
While Shourie's invitation to MIT came ostensibly from the MIT Indian student club, Sangam, a non-political umbrella group that organises many events in the Boston-Cambridge area, his lecture was managed largely by two rather different organisations: the Overseas Friends of the BJP (OFBJP) and the India Association of Greater Boston (IAGB).
The final nail in the coffin of Arun Shourie's commitment to free expression must, of course, be his own writings concerning the freedom of expression of missionaries and evangelicals.
