		The Arvand River (Shatt-ul Arab) is currently not suitable for navigation because it is covered with piles of mud, wreckage of ships and existence of marine mines.
		The dredging of the Arvand River is of utmost priority to Iraq because it links the country to the Persian Gulf.
		According to the agreement, the dredging of the Arvand River is among the duties of a Joint Coordination Bureau (comprising equal number of representatives from both countries).

		Pourshad Marco Arvand was found guilty in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday of drugging eight Asian women by slipping the sedative diazepam into drinks of orange juice and sherry.
		Some of Arvand's victims were lured to his house for lunch or dinner and were poured orange juice or sherry.
		Arvand also argued that the sexual contact he had with three of his victims was completely consensual, although he admitted he did steal their money.

	Iran: Arvand Free Trade Zone goes on stream in Khuzestan province
		According to a memorandum issued by the Khuzestan customs, commodities worth some USD 300 million will be imported into the province through the zone starting at the end of the Iranian current year, the Managing Director of Arvand Free Trade and Industrial Zone Morteza Mamuei told reporters.
		"According to an agreement made between Arvand Free Trade Zone and the Oil Ministry, an oil refinery that is to be constructed in the vicinity of the zone will raise the momentum of economic growth of the province," he maintained.
		Arvand Free Trade and Industrial Zone occupies a 172-sq-km area and includes some parts of the coastal areas of Abadan and Khorramshahr, industrial townships, railway, airport, Minu island and Shalamcheh region.

		Umm Qasr, also known as Khawr Umm Qasr, is a port city in Iraq, on the western side of the al-Faw peninsula on the shores of the Arvand Rud waterway which leads to the Persian Gulf.

		The men were detained in the Shatt al Arab waterway on Monday as they were delivering a patrol boat for the new Iraqi Riverine Patrol Service.

	Iran releases intercepted Iraqi oil tanker, holds crew: source
		Arvand Kenar, Khuzestan prov, Dec 12, IRNA -- Iran Sunday released an Iraqi tanker which it had intercepted last month for navigating in the Iranian waters in Arvand river, but its 10-member crew are still held in custody, an informed source said here.
		The source said the sailors are being held on charges of carrying fire arms and illegal navigation in the Iranian waters on the order of a local court.
		According to the source, the tanker was shipping 6,000 tons of gas oil in Arvand river bordering Iraq, when it was seized by Iranian border guards and its crew were arrested last month.
