Arvi Parbo Biography / Biography of Arvi Parbo Biography
Australian business executive, Arvi Parbo (born 1926) was a postwar immigrant who progressed through the ranks of a mining company to become its chief executive.
Arvi Parbo was born near Tallinn, Estonia, in February 1926.
Rather than change careers, Parbo decided in 1948 that he would emigrate to Australia because, in addition to having a mining industry, it was offering relatively speedy immigration to wartime refugees.

Baillieu Myer and Sir Arvi Parbo, at seventy-six both firmly in that aging population, have announced an independent inquiry into the state of aged care with one million dollars in funding from the Myer Foundation, the philanthropic organisation established by Sidney Myer’s two sons.
SIR ARVI: Well it’s far too early for me to say that but we certainly hope that when the inquiry's completed the Government will make use of all this work and from the conclusions which are drawn and will certainly follow through.
SIR ARVI: Yes I’m looking for, not so much for debates but for constructive discussion because the issues are fairly clear, the needs will be increasing and it is an issue which must be met.

The WMC Dossier - From "The Gulliver File"
Sir Arvi Parbo, at both the 1977 and 1978 WMC annual general meetings, made even more erroneous claims submitting that there were no Aborigines "within hundreds of miles" of the mine, and that Western Australians living in towns were too far away to be affected by operations (37).
At the same time, Arvi Parbo announced a very slimmed-down project, the initial cost for which (he declared) would be "considerably less than the A$1.3 billion estimated in the Environmental Impact Statement" (105): the decision was put down to escalating capital costs, high interest rates and current low metal prices (107).
Arvi Parbo's response was frankly dismissive: the pending Indenture Bill would not, he believed, contain special provisions for Aborigines, and in any case WMC "did not deal directly with the Aborigines" (155).

Except for the incumbent President, Hugh Morgan, the parents have all gone out to pasture and there are signs it's a case of 'Back to Future' in policies as it searches for a reason to continue.
Some would argue that with Morgan at the top, stewardship of the Big End of town in Australia has rightfully returned to Melbourne and the 'real' business leaders of the country: just as it was 21 years ago when Morgan's mentor, the impressive, but deeply conservative Sir Arvi Parbo held sway.
That was striking in his appearance on the ABC Inside Business a couple of week ago: For all the relevance of the Council's new policy ideas, Morgan was most uncertain and highly defensive on the big business issues at the moment: corporate pay, board responsibility, transparency and disclosure.
