It also includes several hills and craters and a prominent cleft by the side of the base of the western mountainous wall.

He has worked as a magazine columnist, has written books on music theory, and has played keyboards in various Canterbury scene progressive rock bands: Uriel, Egg, Arzachel, Khan, Hatfield and the North, Gong, National Health, Bruford and Rapid Eye Movement.
After Hillage left, the other three formed Egg, although the quartet briefly reunited to record an album under the name Arzachel.

Alphonsus escaped being overwhelmed by the ejecta and uplift, but the crater walls were eroded and almost certainly settled as a result of the Imbrian impact, and the stresses of that impact also probably further weakened the crust in the floor of the crater.
Arzachel’s ejecta is best preserved within Alphonsus, since the highland units around Arzachel interfere with discerning the ejecta clearly, except perhaps to the south.

Arzachel is 97 km wide and 3610 meters deep.
Lunar Orbiter 4-108H2 is cropped to show Arzachel, but the original NASA link displays the complete trio, which includes Ptolemaeus and Alphonsus.

Seeing was considered only moderately good, still some individual video frames resolved Rimae Arzachel on Arzachel's floor and just a hint of Rimae Alphonsus near the lower edge of crater Alphonsus at lower right.
Crater Thebit is at upper left of Arzachel, Alpetragius, to far right, its massive central peak summit just being revealed by morning light.

Arzachel (or Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Yahya Al-Zarqali ;)) was another Arabic astronomer of the middle ages to whom Copernicus acknowledged a debt.
Note that the longest such liniment on the face of the Moon is noted as beginning at Lalande C and extending all the way to the Rim of Alphonsus for a total distance of 235km.
Lying on the eastern floor of Arzachel is what appears to be a sinuous rille but which is in reality an arculate rille and a fracture of Arzachel's floor a portion of which, at least, formed in a similar way to the Straight wall.

With the rest of the family asleep at 01:15 am, after waiting an hour for the scope to cool and the Moon to climb high enough in the sky to get a steady image, I pointed the scope toward the 22 day-old Moon.
The first features to emerge were craters Arzachel and Alphonsus now starting to disappear into the sunset (Ptolemaeus had all but disappeared into the darkness already).
Arzachel was the very first Crater I managed to positively identify as a ten year old with an old set of 8x30 Tripod-mounted Binoculars and a copy of the Rukl Atlas from the local library, so it was good to make contact again !

Further to the south is an interesting chain of three big craters visible: Ptolomaeus, Alphonsus and Arzachel (Rukl 44 and Rukl 55).
Tonight I was able to detect a part of the Rimae Arzachel between Arzachel A, the crater northeast of the central peak, and the edge of the crater.
Arzachel K is visible south of Arzachel A. In the western rim of the crater, Arzachel B (a small crater) and Arzachel F (a kind of valley) are visible.

But Steve Keene became fascinated with Arzachel early in March and, despite average seeing, acquired this fine image.
Noticing the two lines of small mounds between the central peak and the crater to the east, Steve commented that it looks like a runway.

His first notable band was Uriel, which included the talents of keyboardist Dave Stewart; Uriel then became Egg (isn't it usually the other way around?) when Hillage went off to university in 1968.
Upon returning to music in 1971, Hillage had a brief stint with his own band Khan, another brief stint with ex-Soft Machine frontman Kevin Ayers, and then moved on to the group that really established his reputation: the hippies-from-outer-space collective Gong.
System 7 released several albums during the 90s through the labels Astralwerks, Butterfly and Cleopatra, and continues to be active in the new millennium.

He invented an improved astrolabe called Safiha flatus or saphaea Arzachelis, the flat sphere or Arzachel's sphere, and his description of it was translated into Latin, Hebrew, and many vernaculars.
