The expense of defending Indian interests was huge, and to pay for it, John III abandoned a number of strongholds in North Africa (Safim, Azamor, Alcacer Ceguer and Arzila).
Asilah or Arzila is a city situated on the northwest tip of Morocco with a history back to 1500 B.C. The Phoenicians used the city as a trading site.
John III decided to abandon Safim and Azamor in 1541, followed by Arzila and Alcácer Ceguer in 1549.

The expedition of 1437 had ended in disaster, but Alcácer Ceguer, east of Tangier, was taken in 1458, and after Arzila to the southwest was seized in 1471, Tangier was abandoned to the Portuguese, leaving all the northwest coastal region of Morocco under Portuguese control.
In 1577 the port of Arzila, near Tangier, surrendered to Portuguese protection, and Muley Muhammed sought Portuguese assistance to regain his throne.
Hiding his true aim, which was an all-out battle with the Moroccans, he led this force inland from Arzila and on August 4 was met near the town of Alcázarquivir by Muley Abd al-Malik's whole force, which may have numbered as many as 40,000.

I have been told that Laura as well as Alfred were both full blooded Cherokee indian.
Query: Arzila Russell: She supposedly traveled the Trail of Tears in 1839 to Oklahoma.
It has been told she was only 4 years old at that time.
