Reading Group Guide | AS I LAY DYING by William Faulkner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Faulkner drafted As I Lay Dying in six weeks while he was working the night shift at a power plant.
Unlike The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying has a clearly delineated plot line: it is the tale of a journey, and despite the many delays in that journey, nothing impedes the straightforward movement of the plot toward its destination--the arrival in Jefferson and the burial of Addie Bundren's body.
It is the often comic, often grotesque story of their singleminded effort to carry out their father's promise to his dying wife: Addie Bundren wishes to be buried with her family in the town of Jefferson, forty miles away.

*As I Lay Dying* is the center of Faulkner's achievement, a slowburning pyre of savage eloquence, a funeral expedition in the fl of mourning.
I decided to read "As I Lay Dying" as a follow up to my recent first experience with Faulkner, "The Sound and the Fury." Neither book was an easy read (actually, both were downright difficult), but for reasons I can't quite explain both were also compulsively, almost obsessively readable.
"As I Lay Dying" was probably the more accessible of the two, although once again the story is told through the eyes of multiple highly subjective and sometimes unreliable narrators.

 EDSITEment - Lesson Plan
William Faulkner's self-proclaimed masterpiece, As I Lay Dying, originally published in 1930, is a fascinating exploration of the many voices found in a Southern family and community.
Yet she only speaks once in the novel, and she is dead, not dying, throughout most of the novel (aside from the beginning chapters).
Faulkner's ability to shift narrative voice in As I Lay Dying results in a rich tapestry of often competing perspectives, where information is doled out in small bits, left to the reader to piece together in an understanding of the larger (yet not complete) family portrait of the Bundrens.
