 Modern Times (1936)
Filmed between 1932 and 1936, it was directed, written, scored, and produced by Chaplin himself - and he also starred in his own 'one-man show' with his current wife and kindred spirit Paulette Goddard.
In one of the film's great opening scenes, the conveyor belt sequence, a masterpiece of choreography, the Tramp is a factory worker (Charlie Chaplin) whose job it is to tighten bolts on an endless series of machine parts - he is a small cog in the factory that exploits its workers.
The foreword explains the film's theme: "'Modern Times.' A story of industry, of individual enterprise - humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness." The film opens with an overhead shot of a flock of sheep jostling in their sheep pen, and rushing through a chute.

 The Film Tribune - Rose-Marie (1936)
However, while the films of MacDonald and Eddy would perform phenomenally at the box-office during the 1930's, the style of their vehicles -- operatic, superficial, stilted, melodramatic, overly innocent and naive as it is -- would lose its appeal with the advent of the Second World War, and would become subjected to criticism and parody.
In the 1936 version of the film, Herbert Stothart, working as a musical director at Metro Goldwyn Mayer, where the film was made, added new music to the film, but the rest of the operetta was completely changed, from the plot to the selection of musical numbers.
With this in mind, it is not surprising that several film adaptations of stage material often looked static and stagy, but audiences did not seem to mind, as the play/musical had also been a success on the stage, with even less artistic possibilities, because of limitations in sets and direction.

Soigne ton gauche / 1936 / film review / Jacques Tati
This early film, written and starring France’s master of comedy, Jacques Tati, was directed by René Clément, a man who is not often associated with slapstick comedy.
The film’s closing scene, with the comic country postman cycling off into the distance, seems to presage Tati’s first notable work as a director, L’École des facteurs, made a decade later.
Years before he became a household name in France for his comic film creations, François the postman and Monsieur Hurlot, Tati was a popular comic performer on stage.

DVD Verdict Review - Pennies From Heaven (1936)
The film received a reasonably warm reception, but its only lasting impression is the title song that was nominated for an Academy Award for 1936's Best Song (losing out to "The Way You Look Tonight," which had been written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields for Swing Time).
Interestingly, at age 27 she was almost at the end of a film career of over 80 pictures that began with child roles in 1914.
In these films, songs were plentiful and it seemed as though there was always a pretty girl or two to win over.

 1936: Horror Campaign
Director George Cukor's film was the first talking version of the content -The title role character was immortalized and based upon one of Alexandre Dumas Fils' acquaintances in Paris - a real youthful courtesan named Marie Alphonsine du Plessis who died at the age of twenty-four.
The film is the remarkable directorial debut of John Huston, filming for Warner Bros. his faithful version of Dashiell Hammett's 1929 novel The Maltese Falcon.
One of the best film noirs of all time - and one of the earliest prototypes of today's 'erotic thrillers.' The screenplay (by Harry Ruskin and Niven Busch) was based on the controversial first novel/pot-boiler (1934) of the same name by notorious writer James M. Cain.

 Film: I Capture The Castle
Freely but respectfully adapted from Dodie Smith's original work, the film rejoices in lush rural settings and a crumbling castle which James Mortmain rents and turns into the family home.
Shortly after, the author Dodie Smith became famous for her children's book The One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which was turned into a highly successful animated Disney film and Hollywood also bought I Capture the Castle.
Ten years later, Cassandra is 17 and while the family fortunes have declined, she keeps herself sane by writing copious notes in her diary.

There are some decent laughs in the film, but I somehow suspect this story worked more effectively on the stage where it first began.
Character actor Frank McHugh is perfect in the role; this is probably his shining moment as a 'Thirties film lead.

 Reefer Madness (1936)
Having just re-watched this movie after a twenty-year hiatus, I have to say that it still stands up as one of the most egregiously erroneous films ever made.
Anyone who has seen this film, which was clearly meant to cash in on the post-illegalization of marijuana, will surely find the Ralph character's stoned antics to be hilariously campy and the Bill character's everything to be alarmingly wooden.
And pay close attention to the seemingly endless scene between Bill and his kid brother about a non-functioning model airplane--it seems to have no point at all to the storyline or the message of the film, but the kid is cute and precocious in that 1930s sort of way.

But don't wait for the remake; this film is well worth seeing.

Sir Richard Rodney BENNETT (b. 1936) - Film Music Collection: Film Music CD Reviews- January 2001
Enchanted April was a 1992 BBC TV film which escaped into the cinemas for a couple of weeks.
His music for this film, which was about Lady Caroline Lamb's disastrous obsessive love for the poet Lord Byron, is distinguished by a very appealing tender romantic melody that is redolent of the Lady's yearning.
The glorious waltz is surely now one of the most famous English film themes ever penned, but there is a tango here which is equally charming, with much witty and sophisticated, to say nothing of luxuriously well-appointed, scoring in-between.

Various - Things To Come: Original Film Music Themes 1936-1945: Film Music on the Web CD Reviews May 2002
Some noise reduction has been attempted, but since a lot of the music predates stereo recording, this really is the 'out of a tin box next door' sound quality many contemporary listeners shy away from.
Composer Charles Williams is another element of the disc that's hardly obscure, but the collector would be hard pressed today to easily track down many of his more than 100 film scores.

 Biography for James Whale (I)
As Universal's leading director, he won the plum assignment of directing the lavish musical Show Boat (1936), and did a fine job, but fell afoul of new management at the studio shortly thereafter.
[To Paul Robeson, upon hearing and seeing the "Ol' Man River" sequence in Whale's 1936 film "Show [* #Show-Boat#Boat"] "The *] spine-chilling effect of that one song was something I shall never forget."
He began his contribution to the horror film genre with his move to Universal, directing Boris Karloff in Frankenstein (1931), notable for its sympathetic presentation of the monster, and The Invisible Man (1933) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), both notable for the humor he injected into horror.
