The first notes in the longest and slowest piece of music in history, designed to go on for 639 years, are being played on a German church organ on Wednesday.
The three notes, which will last for a year-and-a-half, are just the start of the piece, called As Slow As Possible.
It was originally a 20-minute piece for piano, but a group of musicians and philosophers decided to take the title literally and work out how long the longest possible piece of music could last.

NPR : Performance Today -- John Cage: Organ^2/ASLSP
The title is derived from Cage's direction to play the work "as slow as possible." The John Cage Foundation has taken the composer's directive quite literally; the Halberstadt performance is scheduled to end in the year 2640.
Several years after Cage's death in 1992, Betzle and a group of musicologists and philosophers from around the world discussed the possibility of a performance of ASLSP that would truly be in the spirit of John Cage.
The group decided that the duration of the work would be the lifetime of an organ, 639 years, "for as long as the organ can sound, and make sounds, or even stand upright," according to Hans-Ola Ericsson, professor of organ at the University of Lulea, Sweden.

Composed by late avant-garde composer John Cage [top], who died in 1992, the performance has already been going for 17 months - although all that has been heard so far is the sound of the organ's bellows being inflated.
The performance follows a legal case in which composer Mike Batt was forced to pay a six-figure sum to Cage's publishers, who accused him of plagiarising a silent piece of music.

kellymom.com :: Let Down Reflex: Too slow?
Many things can be the cause of a slow or inhibited let-down: anxiety, pain, embarrassment, stress, cold, excessive caffeine use, smoking, use of alcohol, or the use of some medications.
Sometimes a cycle is created, where baby fusses and pulls off because the let-down is slow, which makes mom tense up, which makes the let-down even slower, etc. You can use relaxation techniques and let-down cues to break this cycle.
Let-down is partially a conditioned reflex, or one acquired as a result of repeated "training." The pioneer of research into what he called conditioned reflexes was the Russian neurophysiologist Ivan Pavlov.

 Play us a slow song......
ASLSP began life, somewhat ironically, as a twenty-minute piano piece, but since Cage's death in 1992 - it's one of the many ghostly aspects of this event that the composer was dead long before it began - it was seized on by a group of fans from the John Cage foundation.
Taking the composer at his word, they decided that "as slow as possible" should equal six centuries, and found a derelict church in the former east Germany where an organ had first been installed in 1361, exactly 639 years previously.
A new, stripped-down instrument was specially constructed for the occasion, and it's hoped that more pipes can be squeezed in by the time new chords are due to be played.

This was the "easy" part, but as you can see now, we're kicking well over 500 artists and we've still not quite nailed as many cats as we know we will have to eventually (from 1960 to the present is our window of consideration).
If we discover, uncover, or are sent songs to be added, we try to get them up as soon as possible to keep the database as comprehensive as possible.
Because the nature of a slow jam is essentially carnal on some level (you're either playing it to entice someone or to recall some carnal memory or feeling, etc.) we stayed away from songs that were slow jam-like, but not quite about what a slow jam is FOR.

In fact, you have about six more centuries to hear developments in the work being performed, a version of a composition by John Cage called "As Slow as Possible." A group of musicians and town boosters has given the title a ridiculously extreme interpretation, by stretching the performance to 639 years.
Hans-Ola Ericsson, a Swedish organ professor who helped arrange the score, called it a symbol of possibility to a depressed region.
Cage wrote the piece for piano as "As Slow as Possible," or "ASLSP," in 1985, then adapted it for organ two years later, when it became known as "Organ2/ASLSP." The idea for the latest version was born in 1997, at an organ conference in the Black Forest town of Trossingen.
